Assigning "extra" reading per child, per subject??

Let’s see if I can ask this question w/o confusion, LOL.

I don’t feel as if my dc are reading as much as I would like them to. Well, except for my oldest, I think I’m pretty comfortable w/ his, but I do think I should add one more.

They have their history readers that go along w/ the Modules (Mod. 1 seems to have been the worst for me assigning extra reading, no fault of SCM, of course), literature OR enjoyable readers, devotions/character books (especially my two older boys), and we have a couple read alouds going.

I feel I need to assign more to them. For instance, my 8th grader is working through General Science but isn’t reading a “living” book on the side. He likes to do experiments he finds on youtube and such, but I think I’d like him to read a book as well. Maybe take a break from the science to fit in the book/s or assign the book/s only one day a week?? I’m thinking the same for my 4th/5th grader. He enjoys Swimming Creatures but I feel I need to “assign” extra books for him, too.

Maybe I feel that because they are not just picking up books and reading them outside of “school” time they aren’t reading all the great books I have collected for them. We have so many great books but aren’t being used as much as I had hoped.

I may be over-thinking this but I think not. My kids just aren’t reading as much as I would like, even though they love to read/be read to.

I probably need to add a list to their binders to work through, return to the Organizer or something.

    Any ideas??

No suggestions here. My kids don’t read much on the side either, but I think I have enough assigned that I just don’t worry too much about it. For science, we’ve used Apologia and I think the required reading plus experiments, etc. is plenty to get through in a year. I’m actually giving my 4th grader a break from Apologia and just letting him read living books this year…it’s just feels like too much for me to assign both.

I have so many books around that haven’t been read yet, but there’s only so much time in a day. As long as they’re consistently reading good books in all their subjects I try not to fret it:)  I’m probably no help! Blessings, Gina

I feel the same way, my3boys. My ds8 was reading more on his own, but now chooses to do other things with his free time. I have a book basket in his bed and have him go to bed earlier to do some reading. Then I come in for storytime read aloud.

MFW encourages a family book basket with some of mom’s choices and a scheduled book basket time to encourage reading on their own. I have pulled the extra books from our shelves on topics we are studying in history and science and put them in a basket where they won’t be missed. I did not assign a book basket time, but they naturally were curious about those books and looked at them. Some were picture books.

For assigned reading, I have him read an age appropriate history reader every other day on MWF and a science reader on Tues. Thurs. This is in addition to family history and science studies. Plus every school day is a short reading in a literature or compiled history book. So for assigned reading it is some of two books each day and then some time for free reading before bedtime most nights. I don’t think it would be too much for you to add in another book, at least a few days a week. If it makes you feel any better, take a look at the load of books SL goes through in a year. That was too much for us.

When we travel in the van and run errands I have him bring along a book. If it is sunny enough, I leave the cd player/radio off so he can read. At dark, I play audiobooks. We do not have a dvd player in the van. So it is either reading or audiobooks (sometimes some good music).
