We are using HOD, and have been for six years. Its worked very well for my oldest, but I’m having to tweak it more for my middle three guys because I try to combine them as much as possible. My question is concerning arts and craft projects. HOD has something scheduled everyday. It takes about 15-20 minutes, working on the same project for a week or more, but the projects aren’t really useful. They are interesting and related to the time period, but not useful in the CM way.

SHould I skip these? My only concern with skipping is that my oldest has good memories of many of the projects. In fact, we were at a museum and there was a code breaker on display. He remembers making one from years before. It was a great connection to have.

I think the deciding factor for me is usually are my children wanting the project or are we just doing it?  Maybe consider moving these sorts of projects all to a box for after school time and let the kids have free reign with them each week?  I have some kids who adore these sort of hands on activities and often they chatter on about what they’ve been learning that relates (narration!) while doing the project or sharing the project with someone later on, but I also have two that generally would rather not bother with the extra projects.
