We started homeschooling this past year and used Apologia Zoology 1: Flying Creatures with the Junior Notebooking Journal. My original plan was to do Zoology 2 this upcoming year for 3rd grade. However, I have a son who will be in Kindergarten in another year. Looking ahead through the rest of my two childrens’ educations, I like the idea of doing as many subjects as possible together. So, I thought I would do Anatomy/Physiology with my upcoming 3rd grade daughter, who will be 9 in the fall. Then next year, I would start including my son with Astronomy, then Botany, etc. I want my daughter to complete Anatomy prior to her 7th grade year and being an Integrative Nutrition Health Coach myself, I thought we could do it this year. I keep reading to save it for the later Elementary years. I am going into it with the mindset of getting an overview and exposure for her. We will use the Junior Notebook again too. Anyone complete it this young? Thoughts? Tips? Should I reconsider?

Unless she is a super science minded kid begging to do anatomy, I would hold off.  Were it me, I wouldn’t be concerned about leaving Anatomy until 7th.  I would look at doing something like this if I really wanted to keep them together as long a possible.

    3rd — Z00 2

    4th/K  — Zoo 3

    5th/1 — Astronomy

    6th/2 — Botany

    7th — Anatomy,   3rd — Zoo 1

Another option is to let your daughter choose either Astronomy or Botany for 5th/1st, and the following year she could do Anatomy and your son could do whichever she didn’t pick.  There is also the Chem/Physics book which we’ve been enjoying.  Depending on how you scheduled Astronomy & Botany – she may be able to complete the Chem portion in 5th and the Physics portion in 6th after the family study was done.  I would not be afraid to let the Young Explorers series run into 7th, or even eighth  depending on interest and abilities of your daughter.  Not everyone has a bent for science, and unless you figure she is one of those highly motivated science lovers, I wouldn’t rush her. If she is a highly motivated science lover, she’ll push you.

I believe the above is well said. I bought Anat&Phys with a Jr and regular notebook for my DS G4 and DD G6 last year. I did the first reading and my husband pointed out the glazed over look I didn’t see. It was funny actually. I had not really seen that in them before and we read some thick lit. He then had a thumb through with me and We decided to save it for later. Good decision for us. I do believe it is one of the more difficult in the series, jam packed of brilliant info, but still, much different level that Zoo 2, (which we loved!)

You will know from trying it out with your children if the timing is right.

Thank you for your input. My daughter asks about knowing body parts, which is why I thought to do it. Yet, I purchased it and told her. She then complained and has each time I mention I’m working on plans for our upcoming year. So, I’m rethinking the idea. Without a major change, I know she won’t be going in the medical field. She doesn’t like seeing needles or bodily fluids human or animal. I may just need to ask her again. Thanks for the input!

Ok, I talked with my daughter. She has no preference really. I think I will go with Using the Anatomy/Physiology as a health book extra instead of our science curriculum. Spread anatomy/physiology over two or maybe even three years doing one day a week of short readings. This will be good for state requirements too. Thank you ladies!
