My daughter wants to read Wonder, I am curious if anyone has read it and can comment on if it is worth reading. I don’t have time to pre-read it. I read a few pages and am hesitant. It has some potentially good life lessons, but I’d be curious if anyone has read it and has any opinions. Thanks so much!!!

I just finished reading it and decided to not hand it over to my kids. Let me see if I can remember why… I liked the characters and plot and the ending made me cry. Those were good things. There are many references to pop culture/movies & singers. Star Wars was often mentioned. We just aren’t in to that. But there was some other reason I decided against it… Maybe some language later in the book? I’m sorry; I can’t really remember…. I considered using it for a read-aloud but it would honestly make me cry. I can’t count how many times I have teared up or just bawled during read alouds. Anyway I don’t think there was objectionable content but other people were really mean to the boy.

I read it aloud to my children and we loved it! I thought it was a great book with much food for thought.

Our family listened to the audiobook and we loved it. Kids were 16, 13, 1, & 7 at the time. It was great food for thought at our house, too. Every family’s standards vary, but our family isn’t really bothered by some references to pop culture or even an occasional swear word. As a reference, our take is… We live in the world, but are not of the world. We would much prefer we encounter things in books or maybe even a movie and we can discuss as opposed to waiting and encountering all such things in real life. One of my favorite quotes –

“Since it is so likely that (children) will meet cruel enemies, let them at least have heard of brave knights and heroic courage. Otherwise you are making their destiny not brighter but darker.” C.S. Lewis

I agree. And we have read/discussed many tough things from books and from real life. It just wasn’t a book that I wanted to include right now. As our children mature it may have a place later. There have been a couple books that way. Took me a few years to work in Roll of Thunder Hear My Cry.

Thank you all. I finally found time to read a bit of the beginning and there were too many references to things not yet introduced to my children. Minor compared to what’s out there, but things I’m not sure I’m ready to put in the minds of my children at their current ages. In a few years. It’s good to hear others’ opinions, though. So many decisions to make all the time…there’s wisdom in the counsel of many! Thank you!!
