We recommend trying the sample on your e-reader device before purchasing. Because e-reader devices scale a PDF to fit the screen, the text can sometimes be so small that it’s unreadable without zooming in.

This printed edition of this book is 5.5″ x 8.5″ so the PDF should show pretty well on just about any device.

Okay, it’s late, and maybe I just missed something vital when I was reading the page, but how does the Ancient Egypt book line up with the Oxford exactly? I see the table saying that you’d substitute Ch. 9 of Oxford for Ch. 1 of Ancient Egypt… Does that mean that we would be totally skipping that reading until we hit the week in the schedule that lists Ch. 9 of Oxford? Or would we still read Ch. 2-8 of Oxford, and then pick up with Ancient Egypt? I’m completely confused…

There is a schedule on the “ancient Egypt and her neighbors” page of how and when to read it. From my understanding it is to completely replace Oxford because that book went out of print. I just went through my guide and wrote in the new scheduled book. I am using it instead of Oxford even though I have both. We are really enjoying it and I am actually learning a lot that I didn’t know.

That’s correct. Ancient Egypt and Her Neighbors is meant to replace Oxford First Ancient History for Module 1. The schedule on the links and tips page explains which chapters in the new book correspond to the chapters in Oxford, so that you can still use the second edition of the Genesis through Deuteronomy and Ancient Egypt guide.

@dripdipsplat – By reading other posts of yours, I know that you are frustrated by the switch, especially since you are new to SCM. When this module was written they used the best they had access to.  They did not know that Oxford Press was going to suddenly quit printing the Oxford book they used, nor could they anticipate the ridiculous prices people started charging for the Oxford. Nor will Oxford give them printing rights to the book.  Since a lot of us aren’t rich 😉 and were extremely frustrated about the lack of ability to aquire the Oxford (and scared to make our own book substitutions at first), SCM decided to change the spine. It has just been released, obviously, and looks wonderful.

To answer your question: As scheduled in the Module 1, you never read chapters 2-8 of the Oxford, and you do not read the entire Oxford book.  It is scheduled to be only chapters that pertain to the Ancient Egyptians in Module 1. I counted one time, and it was only like 20 pages of the Oxford for the Ancient Egyptians.  It wasn’t used at all for the family readings in Module 2 – it was scheduled to have your 7-9 graders read the chapters on the Ancient Greeks and narrate back to you.  I can’t remember off the top of my head about the Romans in Mod 3 – it is used, but I am not sure if it is as the family or as individual students.

If you already have the Oxford, you can use the Modules as scheduled with it – they have promised to have the ebook versions of them available even after they release the new modules that use a spine still in print.

If you are still unhappy about the change, then sell your Oxford and switch to the Ancient Egypt book. After finishing Module 1 and starting Module 2, and reading the new book they are *planning* to use as their new spine, I would personally ditch the Oxford and go with the new ones.  The new books are amazing in details, and are more memorable in style.

Either way, and your children are still going to have a fabulous education! I hope that you are able to decide what will work best for your family soon and relax to enjoy the benefits of CM methods!

Thanks Jordan! I think the confusion came from the fact that I haven’t received my print copy of “Genesis through Deuteronomy & Ancient Egypt” yet, so I was just going off of the “schedule” in the sample copy online. The online sample just lists the weeks, not lessons, so that’s what left me scratching my head. I got it now though 🙂
