DS is doing grade 1 in the fall. I have gone around and around about what my plans are. I want to do some history since he really enjoys it, but I feel like Bible/character along with the 3 R’s needs to be priority. I have thought about doing ancient history (like module 1) but I am thinking of waiting a few years for that. DS really seems to enjoy american history more, so I want to go with it. We have read through several biographies over the past year or two together, and we both really enjoy it. So I was thinking of maybe just picking a few biographies (I’m thinking 2 per term, total of 6?) of people from american history to give him some glimpses into the past. With each biography we will add the person to our timeline, and do at least one notebook/narration page (where he dictates to me and illustrates). How does that sound? I am thinking to do this for 1st and 2nd grade, with 1st grade going through the exploration of America. Here is my list:

Leif Erikson (I have the D’Aulaire biography that would be pretty short)

    John Smith

    William Penn

    Benjamin Franklin

    George Washington

    Meriwether Lewis

    Daniel Boone

Anyone have recommendations for good biographies to read on these guys? We LOVE the YWAM biographies and they have the “heroes of history” but I am really hoping to not have to buy but get from the library instead. I want biographies with some meat to them. Maybe 150-250 pages?

I highly recommend all of the D’Aulaire biographies for that age and your library likely has them. It seems there are more Pocahontas books than John Smith: The Double Life of Pocahontas by Jean Fritz is one. There are so many on Franklin and Washington… Ben and Me by Robert Lawson is written from the viewpoint of a mouse and has many nice B&W illustrations. My dc and I loved Lewis and Clark and Me by Laurie Myers. It is written from the viewpoint of their dog, Seaman, and also includes excerpts from Lewis’ journal and some nice color illustrations. Someone on this forum recommended it. Although I think they have some meat to them, these are all less than 150 pages so I may not have been much help. What about the old Landmark books?

Wings2fly-The Landmark books. Great idea! We have already read a few and enjoyed them. Part of the “problem” is that DS can read on a 5-6th grade level himself. I’m sure I’ll get some others as supplements for him to free read, so I’ll definitely take note of your suggestions as they sound fun.

We really like these old out of print Piper Books. http://www.valerieslivinglibrary.com/piper.htm. I have always been able to find them on Amazon. They have Daniel Boone, Benjamin Franklin, and John Smith out of the ones you mentioned. They look like this http://www.amazon.com/Abigail-Adams-The-Presidents-Lady/dp/B000O36HT6/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1369514949&sr=8-1&keywords=Abigail+Adams+piper+books. I put this link because usually Amazon does not have a picture them.

Wanted to update this post. We just finished our first landmark book last week. We did The Vikings by Elizabeth Janeway. Today we started The Adventures of Pere Marquette. DS was excited to see that we are doing another Landmark book. Tomorrow we’ll add the Vikings to our BOC.

I highly recommend Edward Eggleston’s Stories of Great Americans for Little Americans, either as a read aloud or as a reader for him.

You can get the Eggleston book and the Mara Pratt books as online readers or as individual ebook downloads here as well (scroll down to the bottom). Actually, all the books here deal with American history:

Several of them are available as audiobooks from librivox.org as well.
