Does anyone have recommendations for a knock-off version of the American Girl dolls? I heard that Target, Kmart and others have them. My dd is 5, and doesn’t need the original, plus they are beyond our budget. She already has clothes for that size doll that she puts on her baby doll.
Thanks,
C
LinabeanParticipantWe are getting one of the Sears brand of 18″ dolls for our dd this year. We have a Madame Alexander 18″ doll for our older dd which is also very nice. The ones from sears look good to me.

bethannaParticipantI bought Target’s a few years ago and dd still plays with it. Her hair could use a little TLC though!
missceegeeParticipantWe bought the target one and dd6 was happy with it.
My3BlessingsParticipantWe bought the Walmart versions for our two daughters. (6 & 9) They love them!
KarenParticipantWe bought one from Walmart. It’s fine, for the money. It’s legs are a little wonky in that it doesn’t want to stand up in its doll-holder thing nicely.
We were gifted one from JoAnn Fabrics. That one is an all-cloth bodice (the Walmart one has plastic shoulders, which looks nicer and holds the straps of dresses better). The JoAnn one stands in its holder nicer.
My guess is that any doll with hair like that is only going to look nice in the package, because both our dolls’ hair is weird now.
nebbyParticipantWe’ve had the Target ones. Their hair is definitely not as high quality and does get tangly over time. But I’m still not spending $80+ for a doll.

missceegeeParticipantMy girls favorites are waldorf style cloth dolls though. Some are German made by Kathe Kruse, but ours are from etsy. Yes, we paid a bundle ($100 or so each), but they have been treasured and lovingly cared for for years. DD6 is sick and snuggly hers on the couch right now. These dolls have always been preferred by my girls.
MistyParticipantWe bought our 5 dd a Target one this year for Christmas which many around here do instead of the American girl doll, for many reasons. I am hoping it will last a good couple years till she out grows it.
Is the hair ever really good on a doll? :0)
HeatherParticipantWe ordered a My Twinn 18″ doll for dd7 this Christmas. It arrived and it is beautiful and very high quality. They are special ordered to look like your child…a little creepy to me, but my dd was excited about it. It was pricey, but less than the American Girl doll. I also found a website which sells homemade doll clothes. I’ve ordered from them and the clothes are very well made and super inexpensive…$5-$9 for an outfit. It is http://www.dollclothessuperstore.com.
retrofamParticipantThanks all! I am leaning towards the Target one, and I really appreciate the input.
5heartsathomeParticipantI was needing this exact information. Thank you!
My friend wrote this review on making your own doll clothes. HTH:

retrofamParticipantI did more research today after seeing an ad for Aldi with their generic for $20. I decided on the Springfield Collection Abby doll from Family Christian Stores. Michael’s has them too.
Target has several lines of dolls, one called Hearts 4 Hearts that was my 2nd choice.
If I were to spend $70 or $80 I could get a Gotz Precious Day Girls doll, which many like better than AG.
My hubby liked the Springfield doll because she was less glam than Hearts4H.
I also learned that AG are recommended for age 8 and up.
Thanks again!
