On the Analytical Grammar sample teaching schedule, there are reinforcement pages scheduled after Seasons 1 and 2. Are these R pages different from the high school R pages?  If so, are they included in the Season 1 & 2 materials?  I looked at the HS reinforcement sample also.  Do those books include passages from the authors’ works or just biographical information?

DD9 has competed Serl’s Primary Language Lessons and has begun ILL.  I am wondering what to line up after ILL.  Is JAG or JAG:Mechanics necessary before beginning AG?  Would Karen Andreola’s Simply Grammar be too much like Serl’s ILL?  Has anyone used Simply Grammar with their children?  I’d like to fit Andreola’s Story Starters in somewhere also, but I wouldn’t want to overplan once we get to AG & Beyond the Book Report.

AG has a green Review & Reinforcement book for use between seasons. It is sold separately and is different from the HS reinforcements. No Jr. AG is not necessary, imo, but it is good. AG and Jr. AG and the green Review and Reinforcement book are good materials. I recently found Get Smart Grammar from Grammar Revolution and greatly prefer it to AG materials personally. The kids get it and say that it is so much more clear. I agree.

I cannot recommend Beyond the Book Report. There is simply not enough teaching or substance to it. I can wholeheartedly recommend Jump In writing by Sharon Watson. It is really a fabulous tool.

I can’t speak to Story Starters or Simply Grammar. Both are in my library, but I’ve never used them.

For Story Starters, I think that’s the kind of thing you could throw in here and there — it’t not “sequential” like some of the other things you’re talking about, and it can just be a filler or fun change of pace from what you normally do.

Thanks for mentioning Get Smart Grammar, missceegee. I hadn’t heard of that. I was considering AG or Our Mother’s Tongue, although I’ve not actually seen either of them (at least not for more than about 90 seconds). With my older ones they did Jensen’s Grammar which was thorough, but I have little interest in doing that again. And I know it’s a CM thing, but I am just not the biggest fan of Simply Grammar.

I purchased Get Smart to use as review with AG, but I liked it so much, I dropped AG and am sticking with Get Smart. My kids agree. I reviewed Get Smart after purchasing here.

Thank you both so much.  I downloaded samples of both programs you mentioned, Christie, & will take a look at those.  I looked inside Simply Grammar on Amazon and wonder if it would be a better fit for DD9 right now than ILL.  Ahh… decisions, decisions : )

Bethanna, I found the wording in Simply Grammar to be a bit odd.

    For instance, from Lesson 1:

    “To be learned.

Words put together so as to make sense form a sentence.

A sentence has two parts, that of which we speak, and what we say about it.

That of which we speak is the subject.”

When I was using this resource, I often explained the concept with a little more modern wording.  I think Karen Andreola did very little editing to CM’s original words in this book, so some of it sounds strange to the modern ear.  Just giving you a heads up.  It is lovely, though.
