I’m doing module 4 with a 2nd and 4th grader. (K and 2 y/o floating in and out.). We’ve done all assigned thus far, but I’ve struggled with the Famous Men and now the Genevieve Foster World of Columbus books. My children listen and can narrate, but I feel like we are all having trouble keeping track and connecting it all. My personality struggles with not doing everything listed, but I also feel like I may not be getting the most out of our time. Of the first four modules, I feel like we’ve learned the least from this one, but it might just be me. Any advice?

We’re doing Mod. 4 this year, too. My daughters afe 11yo, soon-10yo, 8yo, and 6yo.  And we struggle the same way – it seems like an awful number of people to keep track of.

I will just parenthetically add that the last time thru this time period, we used Story of the World, and it was also hard to keep track of. And we greatly prefer SCM’s organization of the subject matter.

To help us, I try to keep up with the Book of Centuries, and I use Homeschool in the Woods’ figures with text, so that when we’re adding people we can refresh our memories. I am also cutting is some slack, and acknowledging that we are less than perfect and can look up anyone we need to remember at any time on that great invention called the internet! ?

At least for your kiddos’ ages, I think and getting a general sense of the time period and remembering one or two great people is good enough. They are certainly getting a betted hostory educstion tha. Their public-schooled peers.

We have subbed in SOTW 2 in place of the Famous Men books.  My DC are 13 and under.  They all prefer the readings in SOTW.  It covers most of the same people but is easier for them to follow.   I think the next time we go through Middle Ages, I’ll have any high schoolers read through Famous Men on their own and re-read SOTW for our family readings.

If the World of Columbus book is too much could you skip it or substitute another book in it’s place?  DS hasn’t started that one yet, but I’m a bit worried that we’ll have the same issues when he does.

We did Ren to Ref last year, but my oldest was in 3rd, so we did not have the 4th – 6th grade books. I would drop the “World of Columbus and Sons” there are so many other great books in the family and 1st – 3rd grade books that will be read that missing one will not be a a problem. Since your oldest is on l end of grade group, that is when I am more apt to let books go because I realize that an older student might enjoy more, just like last year my 3rd grader enjoyed some books more than my 1st grader

Some of the readings from Famous Men of the Middle Ages got bit long so I would paraphrase some of the longer parahraphs. Some of the readings the kids really liked, it just depended. We skipped Famous Men of Ren & Ref and instead read Night Preacher and Secret Church

Thanks for all the helpful advice…& the encouragement to skip things of its not working!!  Things have actually felt better this week…I’ve noticed so much can affect things, obviously some chapters or stories are easier to listen to, but if our week is too full or we are all feeling extra stress for one reason or another, it seems like too much…& then on a lighter week all round we can handle so much more.  Thanks again for the encouragement.
