Advice on a Year of World Geography?

I am splitting my kids this coming year into two groups: The older kids will be studying Module 6, but I would like to do a year of World Geography/Cultures with my younger three boys before we kick off the history cycle with Module 1 with everyone next year.

My reasoning is that I would like to work more on fundamentals with my little ones next year, and give them a broader worldview from a biblical perspective before jumping into another year of history. I don’t think they are ready to study the issues addressed in Module 6 yet.

    My question is:

Has anyone ever put together a year of world geography studies with living books on their own? Or is there a company offering a year of geography studies based on the CM methods?

Do you have any books that you would recommend as a ‘spine’ for this type of study – or any books that are must-reads?

Warning: We are a busywork free household! So while I am thrilled to do hands on crafts/projects, cooking, etc….I can’t do the worksheet, worksheet, worksheet thing ;-). I would love to find a planned teacher’s guide, but I am hoping to find one that is lit-based and very CM in nature.

    Thanks!

And I meant to add that I would use just the ‘Visits to…’ series with book recommendations, but I would like to cover every continent and it seems they aren’t quite complete yet? Is there a way to use just SCM materials/ recommendations and still accomplish what I am trying to do?

I look forward to hearing what others recommend. I, too, am looking to do a year of World Geography with my oldest who is currently in 10th grade. I really wanted to use the SCM “Visits to…” series but since each one is a year of material, we wouldn’t be able to get them all in before she graduates…unless there’s a way to adapt them in some way to where you could complete maybe two guides in one year. I think if we were able to do that, we might be able to squeeze most, if not all, of the guides in. 🙂

How old are your youngers? My son and I are in the middle of a world geography study now. We did it in 3rd/4th, but it could easily be for younger. If you’re interested, I could email or pm you the booklist. I used Children Just Like Me for the spine and added folktales, picture books, and A to Z type books whenever I could find them.

nerakr, I would love a copy of your booklist please!  Do you also do a map study…or anything else other than reading the books?

    Thanks.

crazy4boys, did you put a plan together with all those wonderful resources from pinterest?  I love seeing all the resources but I can’t piece it together.  Like ServingwithJoy mentioned I would love a planned teacher’s guide as well!

    mrs mccardell,

I’ll pm you as soon as I can with the list. We didn’t do a map drill type thing, but by the time we had started this study dh had downloaded a series of videos from youtube (I’ll send that link, too), that covered most of the countries of the world. I did make a point of showing the country on the map or globe, though.

Thank you for the link, crazy4boys!

@nerakr – I would love to see the booklist!

I think I can piece together my own schedule, but part of my problem is that I am not sure which living books to include with each country. Generally, I rely on what SCM, HOD, Veritas, and others recommend for a book list – but there isn’t really a course of study with recommended materials for this (that I have found).

My little ones are K, 2nd, and 4th grade, by the way.

My booklist should work fine for you, then. If you will pm me your email address, I’ll send it to you.

I would love to see any booklists too!  My oldest wants a World geography year next and I’m gathering ideas and resources. She’ll be 8th grade working on a high school credit, so I have a basic framework planned already.   I think I’ll do an elementary version for the rest of my kids too, who will be 4th, 3rd, gifted 1st, K, prek, prek, and 1 next year.  It will save me some brain power to keep us all doing the same topic just like we would if it were strictly a history module.

If anyone wants to know more about the plans I’ve started feel free to let me know.  They’re pretty sketchy so far…just the big overview of what and how we’ll learn it.

Tristan, please keep me included in your plans.

I also wanted to share that the book “A Picture Perfect Childhood” by Cay Gibson offers 1 Geography book monthly.  She has great selections for some history/holiday biography books monthly as well.  Or she has a section titled “Spanning the Globe” and you can choose books by country.  Another section titled “Read Across America” and books by state.

We’re just using her monthly selections at this point so this is our first month (Jan) and the library had all of them!

A friend of mine used Praying through the 10/40 Window as part of her family’s geography studies.  I’ve not seen the book, but she said it was wonderful.

I have a booklist but it’s saved as a Word document.  In the past when I tried to cut and paste Word documents here, they get all crazy.  If someone can help me figure out how to cut and paste here from Word, I’d be happy to share 🙂  Or, maybe I could put it in a blog post to explain how we’re using it.  Our 12th grader will be using the list to complete a World Cultures study….not sure if this is what I’ll call it yet.  It’s kind of a geography, cultural, missions, thing Tongue out

    Blessings,

    Melissa

    ServingwithJoy,

Have you seen Trail Guide to World Geography? It could be used for a year of World Geography and you could add in some living books to go with it. Maybe even add in Material World and Hungry Planet. Just a thought.

Barefoot Meandering shares this World Geography list free on the website:

It includes a variety of books for various continents and ages. Could be a starting point or reference for any of you creating a geography year.
