Hello! I am researching options for homeschooling my 3 older children this fall and I love everything I have ready about SCM so far. My kids are going into 6th, 4th, and 2nd. While the younger 2 have done really well academically in PS, my oldest has struggled. She is weak in both math and writing but she reads and spells very well. I’m wondering if I should start both of my girls out with Using Language Well book 1 and just skip through faster than otherwise recommended to make sure they have a good foundation. Or will it be too easy for them?

Please don’t work through at a fast pace.  Meet your daughter where she is and allow her to grow at her natural pace.  If you were to get her into and through part of level 4 by the time she were to graduate, she will have a very strong foundation in spelling that will serve her well the rest of her life.

With that said, I encourage you to look through the samples for Spelling Wisdom book 1 to make sure it is a good place to start her.  We also have a placement test available on our Using Language Well page (scroll about 2/3 down the page).

Because she is new to studied dictation, make sure you follow the directions in Using Language Well.  Lesson 1-70 will start as transcription rather than dictation.  This will give her the practice of looking at words very carefully.
