Often I hear of homeschooled students who graduate early or take college classes simultaneously with high school.  My daughter is in 7th grade but is a year older than most in her grade level.  She wants to go to college.  Has anyone using CM had their child graduate early?  It seems it would be possible depending on the student’s motivation and ability to fulfill the state requirements.

I have decided against graduating early unless there is a pressing reason to finish early.  Examples I have heard here are possibility touring with a dance company or more time to pursue a sport at a professional level.

Dual enrollment is another matter. I am in favor of that, online is preferred.

My niece graduated early (public school) and decided to wait to go to college.  She had a difficult time finding work because most places wouldn’t hire a minor. She worked in fast food for a year.  It seemed like a waste to her.

My oldest son has several friends who, while still in high school, are dual-enrolled in some college classes.  So, for example, his friend is taking Biology at a local college and that will count for her high school science credit and a college credit.

I share this to say that I prefer that my kids begin college classes while they are still in high school, if they are able and interested.  That will allow them a solid foundation in the workload, the expectations, and the time management before they actually pursue a full college workload after graduation.

(Here in NH we have another option:  There is an online charter school, called VLACS, on which students can take middle school classes, high school classes, or college classes that are a dual-credit option.  I know some students pursuing an Associates Degree while still in high school.)

I should add that at the current grade level, my dd will be starting her senior year at age 18 years,  5 months of age.
