My 9 yr old son (ADHD) is currently struggling with behavior issues.  Actually, we have always struggled with behavior issues!  I brought him home from Russia when he was 13 mths old. and we have had our share of issues. Our current issues really seem to be a very bad attitude and constant disobedience on everything!  It is driving me batty.  We strive for plenty of outdoor time and he takes P.E. at a local co-op plus he plays tennis.  I limit computer games, etc.    Any thoughts or suggestions? We do watch his diet and don’t allow artificial colors/flavors and try to limit processed foods.

I somehow feel that he is not getting something he needs from me right now?

Also, for those with an ADHD boy, what really works for you?  My son isn’t medicated and that isn’t a route I want to take.

    Thanks,

    Rhonda

I don’t have any ADHD bit to know that by your sons age “boy work” is important. Do you have any real jobs he could do for you to make the house run? Like shoveling snow, feeding animals, mowing….real work. God made boys to need to take care of girls so the mother teacher son roll needs careful navigating. My sons aren’t that old yet but I know many boys well:)

    As always pray!

Raising boys can be an interesting adventure! For some practical help navigating life with boys, I recommend Hal and Melanie Young’s Raising Real Men website, book by the same name, Boot Camp 9-12 Webinar, and other products.

The Boot Camp 9-12 Webinar is for parents with boys ages 9-12. The Youngs schedule the Webinar periodically throughout the year. You would need to contact them to find out when they plan on having the next one.

As a single mom, you may find the Young’s podcast on single moms raising boys helpful.

I agree with all the advice above. Hal and Melanie really helped me! I’m just wondering if you’ve ever read  or watched Diane Craft’s “The Biology of Behavior”. It’s all about ADHD and doesn’t just talk about diet but also supplements. Some of my kids are deficient in calcium and magnesium which sets them up for hyperactivity if not addressed. Probiotics really help with mood, also. She repeats a quote that says “children act how they feel”. I have seen this to be so true.

    Blessings!

Thank you very much for this information. Every year, I basically have to re-evaluate what is working for us and what isn’t.

I appreciate any resources that anyone can suggest.
