Hi everybody, I have just started looking into CM and I know that my kids and I are going to love it!  We all started using Abeka Academy with their DVD’s (have been using it for a few years now) and this will be our last year.  I have been watching the “planning your charlotte mason education” and have the books to go with it but still feel overwhelmed.  I guess I just do not know where to start.  I will have a 2nd, 3rd and 4th grader when we begin.  Is it going to be hard on my fourth grader because of the change between Abeka and CM?  We also spent a lot on our curriculum this year and so it is hard for me to change all of it before we finish the year.  They have had a lot of work in penmanship, my soon to be fourth grader does not like it, and he does not know how to print.  Abeka starts them off on cursive only.  Therefore, my kids do not print very well.  Is it OK to do print with him next year?  He does not like writing because of all the work he has had to do.  Also I am not sure on what to buy or how to teach multiple grades together?  I have so many questions.  I just need help! 🙂  Thank you!  Jennifer

    Welcome, Jennifer!

Go ahead and do printing, if that’s where your children need to be learning.  That is the beauty of homeschool – you can teach what needs teaching!

Have you seen the free curriculum guide:

    http://simplycharlottemason.com/planning/scmguide/

Ity might help you with ideas for what to schedule for individual children, and what to teach together.

If you decide to use any of Sonya’s history guides, they pretty much do the scheduling for you (but you need to purchase the required reading books).  If you choose a history period to study:

    http://simplycharlottemason.com/planning/scmguide/history-modules-overview/

then you can download a sample of the accompanying history guide that will give you a better idea what to expect for scheduling and recommended/required resources.  There are guides available for modules 1-4, with module 5 scheduled to become available in spring.  You can find them in the bookstore section, under “History, Geography, Bible”.

You can also put something together yourself!

I would be glad to try and help you out with specific questions (if I have anything resembling an answer), and I’m sure you’ll receive much wisdom from other moms on this board.

    HI Jennifer!

I’m new here too, although I’m not new to CM. I’m not very familiar with the Abeka DVD system. Is there any reason that you could not drop the majority of the handwriting now? Maybe just have it once a week-and then have some “fun” writing on another day? Fun things like…having him write a note to grandma at the bottom of your letter or add a couple of items to the grocery list on the fridge. Print or cursive-whatever he chooses-I wouldn’t even specify. For next year, why not start him out at square one with having him copy on line 2 what you wrote on line 1 of the notebook paper. As long as your selections are on his level-that could make printing easier for the first week or two, and then he’ll have it down.

In some ways textbooks/workbooks are much easier than CM because there is a good bit of “fill-in-the-blank” type work. But I do not think it will be hard for your oldest to transition. You might consider adding your favorite thing about CM before the year is out. For instance, if you really love the idea of picture study, you could pick up a book of art from the library and choose a picture once a week or even every other week. You could make this an activity for Saturday if Mon-Fri seem too full already. Then over the summer, you might add nature journals, or vice versa. Adding things in slowly to what you are already doing will keep things from seeming So Very Different From What We Did Before.

Enjoy the rest of your year :~) Let CM enrich what you are already doing. And feel free to PM me if you want to discuss specifics on how my multiple grades work together.

Thank you so much for all the great ideas and the welcome!  It sure does help to be able to be in contact with other homeschool mom’s!  I am going to start in the CM direction one step at a time.  There is also a homeschool event in our area this summer that I might go to.  Thank you again!!!

I wanted to say hello and tell you that I have 2nd, 3rd and 4th graders and we do everything together. We love it.

They listen to me read the same biographies for history and do the same science, music, art, and everything like that. We even do spelling and grammar together. I ask them questions like tell me all the nouns, verbs or whatever and I give them a sentence out of whichever book I’m reading them. I just ask my 5th grader a different question like give me the subject or predicate when it’s her turn to answer. I give them spelling words in the same way or dictation out of what they’re reading.

When it’s time for math my two youngest are working at the same level, but the older one just does whatever she’s on, but they do it at the same time (that gets a little tricky for me, but I have Daddy here at varying times and a 17 year old that can help). So they just read different individual books and when they write, they write at their level.

If I had them separate for much, I think I’d die from exhaustion. I can’t see how we could simplify it any more at all. I have used some Abeka books years ago and even tried the DVD Academy when my 5th grader was in Kindergarten I think. We returned it right away. I just wanted something more like CM, even though I didn’t know about it at the time.

I think your kids will really like the CM way. It will be so refreshing for them–so different than what they’ve ever done.

Don’t worry too much about planning. Just choose what you’ll study for cultures or history and science and how you’ll do math, and then learn the method. It really is so natural and simple.

Read, talk about things, do things, observe things, teach them how to live and work, and let them think.

    Best of luck!

Thanks, Doug.  I am going to look into that.

Thanks Art, I agree that this will be refreshing for them.

I have a a few months to read up on everything before we begin our new school year.   One of the biggest reasons I want to change what we are doing is because they are in their own rooms all day watching DVD’s and one of the reasons we chose to homeschool is for me to be with my children and not have us separated all day.  My oldest is really looking forward to me “being the teacher” and all of us being together.  I am excited and I know that we will all bond even more during the year with the CM method.

As I am looking along here I have read that you do not need to teach the same subject everyday.  How do you figure out what days you will be teaching what? I guess I am wondering how often Math or English for example needs to be taught?  Does Living books give you a guide line for each subject on how often in the school year to teach it?  Sorry about all of the questions.  🙂  AND Sorry that I am so confused! 🙂

Good question, Jennifer. A lot of it depends on which book(s) you want to use. I like to select the book(s) and then figure out how long I want to take to use it. That will tell me how many days per week I need to do that book/subject. This Planning series will explain it in a little more detail. The Planning Your CM Education book walks you through it step by step, but the blog series will give you the overview.

Thank you, Sonya.  I think it is all starting to come together.  I did notice that you suggested Math U See for older kids on your curriculum guide.  Is it good to use for grades 1-4?

Yes, it’s a solid program for all the grades. In fact, I recently switched from RightStart to MUS for my youngest. For some reason she got stuck in RightStart. It’s nice to have options. Smile
