Homeschool family scripture memory

As we discussed last time, storing God’s Word in our hearts makes sure that His ideas are always right at hand, no matter what situations we encounter. When you have memorized Scripture, the Holy Spirit can readily reach into that supply and pull out exactly the guidance, comfort, and encouragement that you need.

So how do you get that ready supply stored up in your heart?

A simple way to memorize a Scripture verse or passage is to read it through once a day. Our family did this for years around the breakfast table. Here’s what it looks like.

  1. Mom reads the reference aloud (for example, “John 3:16”).
  2. Everyone repeats the reference aloud (“John 3:16”).
  3. Mom reads the passage aloud once. Everyone listens attentively and joins in on the parts they know.
  4. Everyone repeats the reference aloud again at the end (“John 3:16”).

That’s it. As the days of attentive listening roll by, we begin to know more and more of the passage. Eventually we can all recite the whole thing together from memory, whether it is a single verse or a chapter.

If you have little ones younger than six, you don’t have to require them to participate. Most likely they will want to, though. And most likely they will memorize faster than you do! But even if they simply sit and listen, don’t underestimate the power of their hearing God’s Word every day.

My youngest has developmental delays and autism. For years she sat at the table, quietly listening to the rest of us read and recite Scripture passages. But she never recited, and I wasn’t sure whether it was sinking in. Finally, after all of her older sisters had graduated and it was just the two of us left at the table, I got to see the results. One morning she took one of the verse cards and “read” it to me, but I could see that she wasn’t looking at the words. She was quoting!

It doesn’t take long at all to read aloud the Scripture passage you are working on every day. And several years ago we discovered a wonderful way to review all of the passages we had memorized. Every month we review every verse we have ever learned. But it still doesn’t take long; it takes only 5 or 10 minutes a day.

Watch the video and see for yourself how to put together a Scripture Memory Box that will make memorizing and reviewing God’s Word simple and doable for your whole family.

Little by little build up a store of Scripture in your heart and in your children’s hearts. Make sure you all have an ample supply at hand!
