Our favorite is Rod and Staff. Our older ones struggled with Saxon. They did “get” multiplication with Singapore 3A. But, ultimately, we switched to R&S and found success! So, I’ve continued to use it with our younger children and it is blessing them as well. Some of our older ones have continued highschool with Saxon and DIVE. One studied ABeka. But, R&S was key in bringing understanding.

We use Rays Arithmatic with the game pack from Right Start.  I also have a Japanese abacus for my son to work out his problems with.

We love MUS as well.  DD loves to play with the counters for fun.  I would not ditch manipulatives entirely, esp. when learning a new concept.  Having something to see and touch will help them to understand the WHY of math.  Flashcards are great for practice and review.

Chocodog, would you post a link to “Family Math”?  I was looking for it, and I got several different results and have no idea which one is the one you posted about.  We need to do more games for practicing math facts, and my DD loves games as do I.

we use math mammoth and love its methods – very well taught application of concepts, i find.  it also uses great techniques to teach mental math and real life applications. we also use math u see for some of our kids.  i like mus for ease of use and unluttered pages.  but for content and teaching i like math mammoth better.

We started out with MUS and hated it, moved to Saxon, hated it more. Someone on this site suggested Math On The Level. LOVE IT!!! Please check it out, the books are for pre K – algebra. It takes some time to learn the charting to keep track of where your student is and what to teach next but once you get it, it’s wonderful. There are how to videos that helped me a lot.

    Hope this helps,

We just got Math on the Level as well and love it!  Becky, could you post a link to the videos that help with the charting?  I’ve just been playing around with it so far (ds are 4 and 6 so we’re in no rush).

We’re having great success with Math on the Level as well.  Been using it for 2 years now.

    Heatherma,

The video’s should be on the website, or on youtube. I think that’s where I saw it, try google using math on the level introduction video. But if you can’t find it let me know and I will see if I can link it to you : ) RobinP, I think you are the one who told me about it. We love it.

    artcmomto3,

The book “Family Math is written by Jean Kerr Stenmark,Virginial Thompson and Ruth Cossey. I bought my copy on line because I couldn’t find a link. The copy I have has a strange front cover It is somewhat of a mess but if you look really close it is a picture of a boy blowing bubbles or paper math into the air. His hair is dark and looks like confetti math stuck in it. There is a mouse with a basket of blocks flying above him. There are three people that are standing on his back.

I also wanted to mention that I use to use a book that I beleive was 100 games to play with your children. I will have to look it up at the library. It was a really good book!  There are great math game books out there. This one I am mentioning now I beleive also had english grammar games ect.. in it.    Family Math is just Math.

You could probably think up some on your own once you get Family Math. Maybe you can see if you can get it on Ebay or something.

Oh, I also don’t know how to post a site on here so even if I looked up the info. and found a site I still wouldn’t know how to do that. maybe someone can help me….:)   Blessings everyone!

We also enjoy Games for Math by Peggy Kaye.  Lots of great games to reinforce concepts.

We are Math-U-See fans here.  We’ve tried ABeka, Teaching Textbooks, and Saxon without success. Our high schooler has used/is using MUS Pre-Algebra and Algebra 1 and is finally getting it.  Our younger kids have used Primer, Alpha, and Beta with success.  We played around with MEP and Math Lessons for a Living Education with our youngest ds age 6, but he recently decided he wanted to go back and finish his MUS book.  Looks like we’ll be sticking with it for a while.

(I have RightStart math and my kids like the abacus, but not the lessons.  I would like to incorporate some of the RightStart games though.)

    @ artcmomto3,

I had the book that chocodog is talking about, Family Math, from our library. It was a couple of years ago (and they don’t have it anymore!), but there was plenty of good, fun math practice in it.

In case you’re visual like me, here’s a link to the book on Amazon so you can see it for yourself. If you scroll down the page, you’ll also see that there are books by the same authors for younger children and for middle grades. I haven’t used those. I also noticed a Family Math II book.

    HTH,

    Sue
