  • I just made up my kiddo’s reading lists for the year. These are books I want them to read for literature, besides the ones we already do for our history modules. The lists may be altered as we go along, but right now this is what I have. Most are just good lit for fun and cultural literacy.

    7th grade son:

    Swallows & Amazons books 3 and 4 (he loved books 1 & 2)

    Stories of Don Quixote

    Little Lord Fauntleroy

    Little Women

Howard Pyle’s Book of Pirates (I haven’t really made sure of this one yet, but I love Howard Pyle, so I have to check it out)

The Wouldbegoods (he already read Treasure Seekers, enjoyed it)

    God’s Smuggler

    5th grade son:

    Swallows and Amazons books 1-4

    Caddie Woodlawn

    King of the Wind

    Stories of Don Quixote

    Little Lord Fauntleroy

2nd grade daughter (to be read aloud):

D’Aulaire biographies of Washington, Franklin, and Pocahontas

    Story of Dr. Dolittle

    Little House on the Prairie

    Narnia books

My 5 year old son will sit in with my daughter as he wishes, otherwise just great storybooks for him.

I hadn’t ever thought of compiling a list of books that I want them to read on their own! Literature is a family subject for us, and our book is usually read during lunch time. We have a separate bedtime read aloud as well that is good literature, but I consider it leisure reading.

We are almost totally finished with the Little House series. Ds read and enjoyed all 19 books of The Boxcar Children when he was six and loved each one. Dd is currently reading The Hundred Dresses and The Cricket in Times Square on her own. Ds also reads The Indian in the Cupboard and The Borrowers over and over.

I just keep plenty of good books on their individual bookshelves, and they devour as desired. Laughing

I am still working on this.  My 6th grader reads a lot on his own and I’m not planning to add more than 2 lit books per term to be read on his own on top of 1-2 books for history per term.  The Chronicles of Narnia may be the ones I have him read on his own this year.  We read them as a read aloud nearly 3 years ago.  I don’t exactly keep a list of which books to do when even for read aloud.  I have a running list of possibilities that I take with me to the library and see what happens to be availale at the time. I’ve also got tons of great books on the shelf, so I’ve always got something I can choose from.

We all so do a bedtime read aloud for each of our sons.  Well, my younger son usually has two going at the same time as Dad reads to him when he’s home, and I read something different to him if Dad is working.  I usually read to our older ds.  This works great to give each of our boys some one-on-one time with the parent they have the least in common with. (For example, older ds and dh like the traditional manly stuff: fishing, hiking, hunting, sports.  Younger ds is more a snuggly homebody with more acedemic interests, like mom.)

My leisure list for dd9 includes Hitty, Five Little Peppers series, and she asked to read the rest of the Anne of Green Gables books. She is on the fourth one right now.

My son is 13 and he just finished a Gary Paulsen series. He’s been wanting a new series but I’m not sure what that will be yet. Swallows and Amazons will probably be on his list though. He’s pretty much read through all my options so I need to get some fresh picks.

Dd6 is reading through Little House for her leisure with me. But the whole family enjoys those books so it has become a family read aloud lately when they overhear us reading it together. 🙂

We don’t have a list really. My 6th grader is always reading. She will do at least 2 of the following this year with a Progeny Press Lit Guide:

Anne of Green Gables (doing now)

    Shiloh

    Redwall

    Pride and Prejudice

She gets to choose and when she finishes one study she’ll just pick another. If she does all 4 this year great, if not, she’ll do the rest next year.

My younger children (2nd, 1st, K, Prek, Toddler, and Baby) listen to audio books, read with mommy, and we all (with 6th grader) do a homeschool book club. I actually just posted on my blog how to set a book club up and included a list of most of the books we’ve done the last 2.5 years in book club, so hop over to see my list: http://ourbusyhomeschool.blogspot.com/2012/08/starting-your-own-book-club.html

he’ll do an additional book basket for 1/2 hour.
