   Nina, basically you can substitute with any book that covers the area you are working on. The books Sonya suggests are just that - a suggestion:). I saw on message boards "A Child's History of the World" by Hillyer or "The Story of the World: History for the Classical Child: Volume 1: Ancient Times: From the Earliest Nomads to the Last Roman Emperor" by Susan Wise Bauer as popular alternatives. I can't tell you first hand about these books since we use the Oxford book.

   I have both the Oxford and the SOTW - you can use it as a sub for the Oxford.
