   Do you have plans or ideas for your kids if something happened to you?  Or both you and dh?

   We don't even have a will!  I've been looking online at places that create wills for you for a reasonable price because I recently heard that if we were to die that our kids would be placed in foster care even though we have family who would take them happily.  I am not a 'never could happen to me' type of person, yet I figured if something did happen to both dh and I our children would go to family right away, so I've been lazy about preparing a will.  So now I want a will asap, just in case.  As far as homeschooling, I know my dh would continue to hs them if something happened to just me.  And if something happened to both of us I know my sister would hs them.  So I guess I rest easy on these issues for the most part.  Not saying it would be easy for either of them, but they'd get the job done.

   Also, can anyone recommend an online inexpensive will maker?  I was looking at Preparecase.com.  Anyone ever done something like this?

   As to the inexpensive will maker, Dave Ramsey recommends USLegalForms.com. Haven't used it yet, though. Dh has a will because it was required prior to his deployment six years ago, but I don't. I know I need one.

   As to whether the dc would continue to be homeschooled if it were just dh, I don't know. He wants them homeschooled, but we have no family willing to take it over. I have a sister who would be perfect for the job, but she "doesn't believe in homeschooling." If it were just me, if something happened to dh, I'd do everything I could to be able to homeschool them even if I had to get a full time job or a second part time job (I work part time now).

   I don't mean we'd be destitute. Dh does have life insurance, probably enough to live off of for awhile. I have a small policy, mainly meant to pay off the house but could be used for other things if the house were paid off. We both also have state retirement accounts and are beneficiaries for each other's accounts.

   We do have guardianship papers in place. It's tough, though, because we chose our kids' guardians when we were brand new parents. 7 years later, we have found our feet and know what we want for our kids, but the guardians we chose are so different from who we are now. The basic principles of going to a loving, God-honoring home are still there, but there are so many lifestyle things that are different - everything from the cleaning supplies we use to the food we eat to homeschooling versus public schooling. Unfortunately, I don't know anyone else who I would name. I guess I just have to trust that the foundational principles are still the most important ones, and be as at peace as I can be with our decision.

   Practically, one thing that our insurance agent recommended was to make sure that a family has a reasonable level of life insurance on the at-home partner as well as the working spouse. It is so common to underestimate what the non-employed parent does, but if that person were to die, the working parent would have additional costs for childcare, possibly private school tuition, housekeeping and/or meal services. The working parent might need to cut his/her work hours, transition to a part-time job, or find a more flexible employer to have more time to spend with the children. It was eye-opening to think about it that way.
