Just wanted to chime in and say that I actually found MEP’s Reception level to be perfect for what I wanted for Kindergarten for DD5.  It has been a step up from playing little counting games  and starting to develop more “mathematical thinking”, but without sitting her down with a workbook and lots of math facts yet either, which I didn’t think she was really ready for yet – especially not the lots of writing that would come along with a workbook.   I’m pretty sure we are going to move on to something else for first grade math and not continue with MEP, but we’ve loved it for Kindergarten!   She also really likes the pictures – she is very visual.  As far as printer costs go – yes, they are color, but I have been placing each page in a page protector and having her do them with a dry-erase marker.  Then at least they are reusable.

We considered Shiller years ago because of its Montessori “feel”.  But, as usual, I put off ordering anything and made it past the basics without much of a “curriculum.”  To do that, look at the table of contents of the grade level text/curr. and make a list of the topics.  Most can be taught with household items and a magnadoodle board.  The rest can be taught using the juvenile non-fiction section of the library.  Use various clocks to teach time.  Money works well for teaching money.  ;0)  Fractions can be taught while cooking/baking/eating.  One-to-one correspondence can be taught setting the table.  The memory game helps build math and pre-reading skills.  Once number identification and counting are understood in a hand’s on way, start memory work.  Addition for 1st grade, Subtraction for 2nd, Multiplication for 3rd, and Division for 4th.  Or, use the commutative property and teach two skills at a time.  The Bookfinder may have many of the living math books at this link that may be helpful:  http://www.pennygardner.com/mathclassics.html

    Blessings,
