My ds is going to begin The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle today and I was just wanting to get some input on this book. I love the tv series, audio books (by Jim Weiss) and the movies, but have never read the books.  After he tests it out today and if he finds it’s not his style, what would you all recommend??  He’s not a strong/avid reader so any suggestions would be helpful.

He’s 15, not into talking creatures or anything like that, think: Narnia, The Hobbit, Redwall series. And he’s not overly sensitive.

    Thanks!

My 11yo boy LOVES them, and are in his top ten list of his favorite books.  🙂 Hopefully your son will love them too!  If I assigned it to my son as assigned reading, I’d make him chug through, even if he didn’t love it.  How ever, if it is free reading or child-led reading, then I’d let him decide.

Well, he started the first chapter this morning and found it to be “rather interesting”. He gave me a nice detailed narration and, I think, will continue with it.  This will be for literature right now, he doesn’t do much “free reading” I’m sorry to say.

    Thanks a bunch.

I read it for the first time just this past month.  I forgot about the drug use that is covered in some of the TV shows.  I guess that is a good discussion opener for the kids.

We like Sherlock Holmes and we also love the Father Brown mysteries by G.K. Chesterton.
