  • How do you handle verses that are already memorized and are in monthly when they start loosing it and it is not staying memorized?

My oldest has had verses memorized for months and he is suppose to be reviewing them daily yet he is still not keeping them memorized.  I have tried moving them back to daily for more frequent review and then move them back but he currently has about 20 verses in daily and it is taking us so long to review them.

    Any suggestions?

Do you keep some verses in your weekly section?  I tend to keep all verses there until the kids can recite them perfectly, then they move to the monthly section.  If there is a verse that they start to forget (or even if it is a verse they’ve already memorized that I know will be coming up in church soon), I move it back to the weekly or odd/even section for more frequent review.

I never keep more than one verse in daily.  I do have more than one in even/odd or weekly, though.  Overall we review about 5-10 verses each day.

In the Scripture Memory Box system (I assume that’s what you’re using here?), you start with daily, then move to Even/Odd (so they’re practicing the same verses every other day), then move to day of the week (so they’re practicing them once a week), and then to date (so they’re practicing them once a month).  I can’t tell from your post, but are you skipping the Even/Odd & day of the week sections?

Either way, I wouldn’t do more than one, possibly 2 in the daily section.  If he’s not keeping them memorized, did he have them truly memorized enough to take it out of Daily?  My 7yo is not a good memorizer.  I keep them in the Daily until she gets it.  It usually takes much longer than a week, sometimes several weeks depending on how long the passage is.  My older 2 are great at memorizing (especially one), but it doesn’t hurt them to do it over and over until their younger sister can do it, too.

I’m sorry I was unclear.  Yes, I am using the Scripture Memory System.  I start the verse in Daily and then move to Odd/Even, then weekly and we used to do monthly, but I am doing bi-monthly.  I don’t move it until he can say it several days without mistakes.  And some of these, he will do great for months and then start loosing it.

My son is very good at memorizing and has close to 100+ verses/poems memorized with some of them being chapters.  So I don’t know if his mind is getting jumbled with all the verses he has memorized.

He has told me that he reviews them but with him not maintaining them, I have had him review them daily no matter where they are placed.  So he will review the whole scripture box.  So I think part of the problem is he is not being honest with me about his review or he is just reading them rather than trying to say them without looking.

It gets hard because I have two other children with verses memorized and the same thing is happening to them as well.  So between the 3 children, we are reviewing 30-40 verses in daily alone because we are working on ones that have lost track of.  They are not new verses.  My goal is to have only one or two new verses.  And since they have so many in daily, I am not adding new verses until they can really get these ones under their belts.

    Hope this makes sense.

I have that issue myself. (My brain is older so I use that as my excuse.) 🙂 But I find that God often brings verses to my remembrance at just the right time. You can move the verses around however will benefit him most but if he has hidden them in his heart, they will be there when he needs them.

I agree with Robin.  There is technically not an upper limit for what one can memorize, and some individuals have memorized things that seem very nearly incredible to me (huge portions of scripture, pi to the forever, lol) but these people spend a lot of time on this.  Any of us must decide what is a practical amount of time to maintain, and then stay there.  My children can manage 3 verses on each monthly day and be very very good, but not necessarily always word perfect.  But the meaning is there, and the child knows where to find the verse!  This is valuable.  And as Robin said–

    • John 14:26

26 But the Comforter, which is the Holy Ghost, whom the Father will send in my name, he shall teach you all things, and bring all things to your remembrance, whatsoever I have said unto you.

    • So if it’s in there, it’ll be there when he needs it!  Don’t worry too much.
