Ok, We are doing christian Liberty Nature readers. My son’s are wanting more of a science projects type of learning. I have done some hands on kinds of things but I was wondering what everyone else is doing. What is your/your kids favorite curriculm for Science? What you have tried in the past?  did you like it? why or why not ?  I am sort of a curriculm junkie so  I don’t want to keep looking for that wonderful science curriculm and pick and choose threw it. I wasn’t to concerned about their science but they have been asking. So, now I am wondering maybe they need a little more of a challenge!?!

I do like videos also. I don’t know if there is one with science experiments on them where I can just supervise and set up. This way they are learning. They are more visual learners and so am I.   Thanks for your input I appriciate all the help I can get..  While I ponder what to do.

                      Thanks!

We started this year with apologia’s fly creatures with my 8 year old (and 4 year old tagalong.)  She liked it at first, but the detail started to bogg her down.  We switched 1 month ago to SCM recommendation of 106 days of creation and Considering God’s creation.  I couldn’t be happier with our decision to switch.  We are now doing experiements (10 – 15 min. long) and both of my kids enjoy them.  Some parents shy away from too many experiments because of the time and planning involved (I was one of them).  106 days makes it so easy and doable not to mention enjoyable.  CGC adds some fun activities, if your child enjoys little projects.  Along with the experiments, your child will make a creation notebook. After doing some of these with my 4 year old, he is now going around the house doing experiments on his own.  It’s really brought out the scientist in him, which I am learning is soooooo important for the preschool age…it’s up there with reading (imo).

I love how Sonya has tied the bible into the lessons.  On some days, it’s just like having a Bible lesson!

We have learned so much from these lessons already.  Thanks again, Sonya!!!

Note:  We are currently studying American History (Ben Franklin right now).  I added the book The Ben Franklin Book of Easy and Incredible Experiments to our lessons and it gives some history, but mostly covers experiments that focus on basic science topics.  This book has also been awesome.  Just wanted to put that out there incase some people may be studying AH, BF or not currenly doing science and just wanted a fun book to try with their kids.

I, too, can’t say enough about 106. It has been an absolute joy with my 8 and 6 yos. I will definitely be doing it again with my boys who are not yet old enough.

Oh, and if you are willing to splurge a little and get all of the Moody videos on DVD that are recommended you’ll find it to be such a treasure.

Sonlight Discover and Do DVD’s are also fun.  My son would watch some and initiate doing them on his own, with little to no help needed.  We’d also use them for some educational learning on sick days.  :)Gina

Unfortunately, science has become my nemesis, but I’m working on it 😉

Our high schooler likes Apologia, but our youngers get bogged down by it.  They really enjoyed Outdoor Secrets, but we’ve finished it and have been punting ever since.  I recently wrote a curriculum using Among the Farmyard People, but it doesn’t have many experiements.

You can read about our experience here….  http://reflectionsfromdrywoodcreek.blogspot.com/2012/01/science-quandary.html and http://reflectionsfromdrywoodcreek.blogspot.com/2012/01/science-saga-continues.html  (I receieved comments from Dr. Jay Wile, formerly of Apologia.  If you’re outside the US, he’s wrtten a new elementary science that you can download for free.)

If you’re looking for experiments, have you tried The Young Scientist Club?  http://www.theyoungscientistsclub.com/retailstore/  These are used in NOEO science and by many homeschool families with elementary kids.

We did 106 Days two years ago and loved it.  Since that time I have not been able to find anything to compare.  I am a science/nature junkie and am not happy with two other things we have tried, one being Apolgia swimming creatures.  I can’t really explain why but I just didn’t care for it and have shelved it for now.  Am really wondering what others are using and if they can direct me to something I/we will like!

Rebekah P, thanks for your recommendation about the Ben Franklin science book. Your timing is perfect. I ordered it for one of the kids’ Easter Baskets.

Thanks everyone for some great ideas. I will have to look into these. If anyone has more I would love to hear them.

I’ve decided to quit looking for a science curriculum and just do unit studies.  I found a great resource at http://www.oklahomahomeschool.com/scientists.html by Cindy Downes.

I just thought I would share my idea and what I think is a great resource for my family right now!
