This year we are studying Old Testament and the Ancients for our history/Bible/geography subjects, and I am interested in doing some notebooking.  I’ve looked at Notebookingpages.com and the Truthquest Notebooking pages, but would love to hear of any other/different approaches to notebooking that some of you might use.  One particular question I am trying to answer is whether to use a “pre-packaged” sheet (as in the choices I mentioned above), or more of a “blank slate” approach.  I’m looking for something simple that my children will enjoy doing and will record their learning.

    Thanks so much!

I bought this http://historyscribe.com/hs-historyscribe.htm awhile ago but have not yet used it. I really like the looks of the guided essay questions for high school. It includes different versions of line heights for all level of writers. You can download free samples to see what the pages look like.

We do a mix of both! I have the Notebooking Pages Treasury and love it. I print things when interests come along or I know a topic is coming. I also printed a whole file folder full of her general notebooking pages for any topic. The kids can grab from that any time. Remind me how old your kids are? Mine are 11, 7, 6, 4, 3, 1, and 7 mos. None seem to have a preference on whether the page is specific to the topic or not at my house.

There is a great blog by a homeschooling mom in S. Africa. She offers her notebooking pages free:

We use a “blank slate” approach.  I sometimes have them copy a map, diagram, Bible verse, or some facts in their pages, but they do the rest.  My DC love to draw, so this works very well for us…If they drug their feet at it, I’d probably go a different route.

We also use a mixture of both.  Iwill say that when we first started, my kids had real trouble with a blank piece of paper.  Using some preprinted formula pages really helped them in the beginning.

Great ideas to look into – thank you ladies!

(Tristan – my children are 12, 10, 8, 5, 2 – thanks for all of the help you’ve given me over the last week or so!)
