Next step in reading???

I was hopeing you all could offer a little advice.  My 6.5 yo dd is finishing her Kindergarten year.  She is on lesson 101 of Alpha-Phonics, which is -ough and -augh, such as cough and laughter.  She is doing really well with her reading, I feel.  I don’t see a lot of translation of her reading and word recognition crossing over in her personal writing, but I understand that will come with time and practice as she gets older.  She reads aloud well for her age.

My question is that what to do next?  She’s reading well, but could benefit from review and extra reading.  What’s a good next step for her first grade year?  What should I do this summer – just keep her reading lots of things out loud?  Just as a side note, fyi, she has just completed Queens Language Lessons, Language Lessons for Little Ones Vol 2, and I will be ordering Vol 3 soon – for her to work through, though almost half the phonics in it will be review.

    Thoughts?

    Thanks,

    Amy

I’m not sure on how the levels compare – but we are using Christian Liberty Nature Readers for extra reading practice, with some science thrown in.  I think the Level 1 would probably work out well – even if it is a little easy (and It isn’t super easy or anything) the science would be worthwhile.

And yes, I’d find good books for her to read outloud.

Thanks, Suzukimom.  I will look into those.  Any thoughts about wether extra phonics instruction or review would be needed after Alpha-Phonics program?

well, I haven’t used Alpha-Phonics, so I don’t know for sure…  but from the sounds of it, I think it sounds like things are good, and I wouldn’t worry about more phonics.

I’d just work on having her do actual reading.  To me, the point of this is reading… not learning a bunch of rules… ykwim?

Hi! I’m also curious about the next step in reading. I have a 6 yr. dd, next month, and we are finishing up Teach Your Child to read in 100 easy lessons. We have began the Pathway series with First Steps, but I don’t think it’s enough. I’m debating purchasing Delightful Reading, it sounds so wonderful. But cost has put a whoa in my step. I would love to see any suggestions.

By the way I’m a daily on-looker, thank you all so much for your wonderful advice and encouragement. :o)

I wish I had more advise for you…  I’d love to buy Delightful Reading too….

It seems with my kids, once they get to one point, just finding good books that they can read at about the right level seems to be the best plan.

First let me say I’m not even as far along as you. We are still working through our reading program :o)

But a kindergarten teacher who I really respect (at a small local classical Christian school) has told me that at some point just practicing reading aloud is going to be the key to cementing all they have learned. She recommends that outside of any formal time or lesson that you are doing with them you sit down three other times during the day for 5 minutes to have the child read aloud. So say after lunch, before dinner and at bedtime they read to for five minutes. This makes sense to me because she would be getting repetition and practice and it would really tune you in to any weak areas.

Also, the Queen lessons sound like great reinforcement.

    Just my thoughts…..:o)

If you like Queens, their Spelling Through Copywork also reinforces phonics. I think you have a great idea to just keep her reading aloud to you this summer. It may encourage her to find readers that will really peak her interest. Sonlight has some excellent reader choices for that age. Enjoy your precious time together 🙂 ! Heather

Funny, you suggested that Heather…I just looked last night at the Spelling Through Copywork…and had decided that would be perfect reinforcement!    Thanks everyone for the input!
