Hello! We are new to CM, but have been homeschooling for three years now. I still feel like a newbie though. I finally feel comfortable with our states rules and regulations…sort of. But this method appeals to me and I think it would be good for us. I have been looking at the SCM site and looking at everything! I want to ease into it for the remainder of this school year and hopefully start following the method for next school year. Any pointers, tips and encouragement are deeply appreciated! Thank you so much and I look forward to learning and sharing stories with all of you!

Just have a minute here but I will reply more later………….my reccommendation for a new CMer would be to add one CM subject at a time-small steps so you do not get overwhelmed.  If I had to do it over again, I would start incorporating HABIT TRAINIG first and invest in the Laying Down the Rails curriculum by SCM right away.

KerryWick, you might find this article series on making the transition to CM helpful: http://simplycharlottemason.com/series/making-the-transition-to-cm/

Jordan posted a great article! Thanks Jordan.

Way back 15 years ago or so, I made the transition to a more CM education for my older kids much the way Lishie describes. I picked one subject first and tried to apply the princlipals- short lessons, variety, spread the feast, living books etc. and the methods- narration, nature study, map work, etc. subject by subject and slowly dropping the worktexts and “school in a box” we had been using before. Its wasn’t so overwhelming for me that way, and it helped my kids not feel so lost in the transition.

Even though it may seem “easier”, CM requires more thought and understanding than just spitting out the pre-forumulated answers of a text book, so it can be challenging for the kids (and Moms!) at times.Fortunately it can be so enjoyable the challenges are often not noticed too much with a gradual transition.Sealed
