I am helping to lead a group of jr & sr high students through a mock election process in a few weeks. One of the suggested activities is to read through a piece of fiction that depicts government in action (or lack thereof) so that it can be compared/ contrasted with our political system. Of course, the piece of work that they suggest is The Lord of the Flies. Besides the fact that I simply can not get through that book myself because of my own personal sensitivity to the described behaviors and actions, there will be parents who will NOT want this book read to their student as well.
Here’s the rub, since I am actually combining some ideas to come up with a curriculum for this, I need quick ideas for a replacement – and I can. not. seem to come up with any off the top of my head right now. UGH! Please remember I only need a small excerpt that shows the governmental actions, or not, as the case may be.
Thanks so much for your help,

LinabeanParticipantAnimal Farm??? Sorry I can’t be of more help. This just popped into my head when I read your post and so I thought I would throw it out there!
Hope you come up with something you like! : )

suzukimomParticipantWatership Down? (you have a choice of style of government if just reading an excerpt…)
1984 (not the whole book! (sex)) – for a totalitarian government
LinabeanParticipantYES! Watership Down, that’s the other one I was trying to think of! All I could come up with was a mental picture of the book cover with no title! LOL! It was driving me batty! Thank you, Suzukimom, for putting the title on my “mental book cover”! LOL!
I think I would choose that one over Animal Farm, actually.

4myboysParticipantMy first thought was Animal Farm, But I really enjoyed Watership Down so much that I picked up a copy at a used book sale about 15 years ago. I will definately be planning to have my son read it in a couple years. (For PS we read it in grade 8, but I know some do it in high school.)
blue jParticipantThanks all! I will find a copy of Watership Down and read an excerpt from that.
