Trying to figure a few thisngs out here...When I click on the Curriculum guide, then on HISTORY, GEOGRAPHY, BIBLE, I see a column of modules from 1-6. What is this? Same goes for literature.
My kids will be in th 2nd and 5th grade level, and I would like to combine Science, Geography, Bible to do together if possible. Any advice?

Those are the Modules available through SCM. Here is detailed information on how to use them. If you click on any of the subjects in the first column of the Curriculum Guide it should jump you to more detail as well.

Hey Marta.
The "modules" are suggestions for things to do each year. So you could pick Module 1 and do that for your whole family. With History, geography, bible - you will want to do the modules in order, but it doesn't matter where you start. You just go through 1-6 over and over, adding in new students as they get old enough, and graduating out the older students when they graduate. You do them in order so it is over-all chronological... but younger students join in wherever you are at (I hope I'm explaining it right.)
I'm not as clear with the literature... you would pick a module that looks interesting and would work for your family. I think they are done together... but I think that the different modules vary be difficulty, so I'm not 100% sure how that works either. (we pick our own literature here....)

For literature, the modules are actually grade levels. That said, I did not simply use the list as is for my 4th & 5th graders. We did a lot of books as read-alouds at lunchtime, and I chose books from both the 4th and 5th grade levels. Then, I just assigned an additional book or two from the lists for each to read individually.
We are doing 106 Days of Creation with Considering God's Creations books right now. They are simple to use, and my girls like the experiments outlined in the 106 book, and really enjoy the notebooking type activities in the Considering books. I think that we need both - and I do use both teacher's manuals to help explain things. But both are simple to read and explain and understand. They should be a good intro to Apologia studies - I thought my kiddos would enjoy both recommendations better this way.
Do you have any specific questions I can answer about them?

Thank you for your help! No I just wanted to hear from someone who used them to see if I indeed needed to purchase both of the curriculum books. This helps greately. NOW! I have a curriculum organized...I think. :)
Now, how do you put all this into a daily and weekly lesson plans? is there some kind of an planner that you all use? Again comming from a curriculum that had it all panned out for me, I did not have to do any thinking (but it also took all the fun out of it). I just opened the book and it was there for me. Any help on that would be great.

hmmm...I have to buy abother book? Isn't there somewhere FREE that I can read on this subject?
Well, I'm sure people have posted on various blogs what they have done...
If you have worked out what you want to do for the year (which it sounded like you did)... break it down into smaller bits (ie, 3 terms, or 4 quarters, or whatever) and figure out what you are doing each term. Work out how many times a week you will need to do a subject to cover what you want to do in the term. You might need to tweak this a bit as you go (I do a review every 4 weeks of our 12 week term...).
Then take how often you need to do each subject in the week, and place them into the various days, keeping in mind outside lessons etc. Someone mentioned recently on a post using index cards to figure this out, so you can work it out.
In the day, have time for family subjects, time for independant work, and time for one-on-one with each student.
Or, because our school is going to need to be more flexible next year... I plan to basically have things worked out to the week, and then let my students choose what to do when... making sure that they do a mixture each day, and making sure they do enough subjects a day so they don't have everything to do on the last day!
The planning book really does help with laying it out better than that...
I really recommend spending the money on the PLanning Your CM Education. It will help you set your goals, make up your "big picture" plan, plan the year, and then help you break those plans into terms, weeks, and days. It is reusable, so it is a valuable resource if you are doing this for the long haul. I have other books like it, but none of them are as simple to read and use. If you can't get it now:
For the family:
The SCM history modules plan on a daily lesson if you are using them, realizing that this covers History, geography, and Bible; so M-F.
Literature, poetry, scripture memorization, character training, etc. are daily; so M-F. (To do all but the literature takes 15 minutes total a day). Literature depends on whether you use a timer, pages or chapters to set your limits.
The SCM 106 Days/Considering books are scheduled three times a week, say MWF. Nature Study is once a week, either T or Th.
Hymn study, picture study, drawing or creative art, music composer study, handicrafts is once a week, although I listen to the music everyday in the background. Ex: hymn - M; picture study - T; art - W; music study - TH, and handicrafts - F.
Each child:
Math daily for one lesson or 15-20 minutes.
Lang. Art will vary on the student, but I have mine all doing copywork, and the oldest are doing the Spelling Wisdom, averaging one to two passages a week. The olders are doing grammar twice a week.
Independent reading for various subjects daily (science, history, literature...)
Insrtument practice daily
You can put anything where ever you want. That was just to kind of show what I did this year to help balance out my days. =)
