    Hi Friends,

I can’t believe it’s already the final year of highschool for my oldest ds! As I’m making final plans, I would love to hear (next to basic subject requirements) what your “musts” are before graduating your dc. You know those extra things – like particular books you want them to read, or places you want them to see, or activities you want them to do before graduating?

I’ve been on this forum since my oldest was 12 and now he’s turning 18. I’ve been reflecting on how invaluable this community has been over the years and want to say a big THANK YOU to all of you here and the SCM team. May The Lord continue to bless you all on this homeschooling journey. May you enjoy each day, savoring the years because they go by way too fast.

    Grateful,

    Heather

I’ve only been on the forum for a year!  I didn’t know the forum or SCM had been around for more than the last couple of years.

I am following this thread because I have one who is also rounding the home base of homeschool.  Though he’s only a sophomore and 16, I can see by how fast time has flown by that it will be his senior year before I know it.

I know that before he graduates, I want him to study the following things:

Government and Economics with Uncle Eric books.

    Stewardship by Math U See

I would love to be able to teach my children old hymns doing hymn study and art by doing art study.  As much as I love the CM method, these are two things that escape my plans every school year.

Books I’d like him to read: Pride and Prejudice, Uncle Tom’s Cabin, anything by Shakespeare, LOTS of non-fiction and anything else that interests him.

I’d also like to make sure that I am continuing to teach him to study the Bible daily.  This is something that is new for us this school year, and he seems to be really getting a lot out of it.

I want to make sure we do more service projects.  Maybe even take a mission trip.

I want to teach him to play the piano.  I played forever and I don’t want him to grow up never knowing any piano basics.  He plays guitar, but I think piano is invaluable.

I’d like him to start his own micro business instead of getting a traditional job.  He studied the books Micro Business for Teens last year, and I think he would be really good at it, he just needs a little encouragement and some start-up cash.

If it was his last year, and I was tryin to make sure I got the “must-haves” before he graduated, the most important item at the top of the list would be making sure he knows how important he is to God.  How much God loves him and that I would savor every single moment I have left with him in our final homeschool year.  I want to make sure that I model love and kindness every day and even if there was an important book left unread, or a math course left undone, the most important thing would be that we showed our son who Jesus is and that we would make sure he never forgot.

What a blessing homeschooling is.  I am excited about the future for my children, but sad that they won’t be beside me all the days of their lives.

I am anxious to see what anyone else has to offer on this topic as well.

Amen! Jenni, thank you so much for sharing this! It confirms what has been on my heart about my son’s last year – to focus on my “relationship” with him and showing the love of Christ daily! What a blessing this forum is; It’s my guess that this community has been around 6+ years. Anybody know?

The forum has been around for almost six years. We posted the first welcome message on October 25, 2007. The first discussion topic started was Bible Time essential on 11/03/2007

Can anyone guess who the first person was to sign up for an account? Hint: This person still posts regularly now but wasn’t the first to post back then.

    I’m guessing Bookworm.

Well, actually is was me, then Sonya, then Karen. Wink And you’re correct, it was then Bookworm.

I just found the original blog post announcing the New SCM Community Forum. I love this part of the announcement in particular:

We realize it’s just a blank slate right now, but it will soon become what we all make it.

And you all have made it something very special! Thank you!

You are welcome csmamma!  I know in my heart that my relationship with my son and teaching him about God is the top priority no matter what.  I am glad that this forum is such a blessing for you!  Good luck to you this school year!

Real quick off the top of my head…has he read 7 Men Who Ruled the World From the Grave? My oldest daughter (senior as well this year!) read that last year and thought it was so very thought provoking.  She’s always been a big Jane Austen fan and has read just about everything by her, but not sure if a boy would love all of her work as much!  😉

Also…books from Lamplighter…life changing (the audio dramas are great, too).  I’ll ask her tomorrow if she has any suggestions.

And I definitely second the relationship focus…first on Christ, then sharing their thoughts with us. Have a great senior year with him!!!  We’ll celebrate together in June!!!

    Blessings,

I second Seven Men as a must read! Our eldest daughter and I read that last year as part of her senior year. Wish I’d had our older toe sons read it. Excellent!
