Ok, so I have 11.5 year old boy with dysgraphia heading into grade six and his second year of homeschool but I am having such a hard time deciding which is the best route to go for Language Arts. I have been looking very hard at ILL, and appreciate that it's pretty much all there because poetry and picture study isn't something we did much of this year, because they were pretty low on my list of priorities this year. I am trying to place them higher this year by being much more prepared for those things before September comes. Now I've heard of two other programs that I am looking at and feel I should consider: Writing Tales and Meaningful Composition, both of which I've read about in recent threads. I am not worried about grammar beyond the basics, which he pretty much has, so much as actually learning to write complete thoughts in an organized fashion.
ILL may be a gentler into to writing, but it appears to be perhaps less structured. I wonder if offering him something more structured in terms of writing style might be of more benefit where he has this particular difficulty. ILL is certainly the most cost effective option to me at the moment, which matters. Especially if I have to buy a teachers guide. I also need something he can do at least some of independently, so I've been looking at the workbook version also mentioned in a recent post.
If I were to go with ILL, use it over 2 years, then move on to Our Mother Tongue and Jump In! for 8th, does that sound reasonable? Our should I look at doing Meaningful Composition or Writng Tales in one year, then move to the OMT and Jump In! in 7th?
I am undecided on Spelling Power of Sequential Spelling, also, but I think dictation -- at least at this point -- would be over whelming for him. I may look at combing the two once his handwriting improves more. We are also focusing more on typing this year coming.
Any input would be very much appreciated. Thanks!
