   We've had a few posts about how to organize your bookshelves (which I've really appreciated), but how do you organize them on the computer?  I use Delicious Library for the Mac, but you can't download that to your iPod/iPhone anymore.  We have so many books that I'm buying things I already have copies of because I can't remember.  Is there an easy way to keep track of them on the computer?  Or a way to print a list?  

   I went to the library book sale today and was forever asking my kids, "Do we have this?"  I picked up several things that I'm pretty sure I have, but didn't want to pass it up in case I didn't.  How do you deal with book sales and book stores or any situation when you're away from your computer?  We also have grandparents buying us duplicates of books and I'd like to figure out how to let them know what we have.

   Is there a better home library organization solution?

I have it on my ipod as well, so it is with me everywhere I go, that way I avoid duplicate buying.  You do need a scanner to use it, but I have found it very efficient.  I am sure there are other ideas out there as well.

   Linda - Is the cheaper scanner worth it or do you really need the more expensive one?  I'm glad it works on the iPod because so many only work on an iPhone which requires internet connection.  I appreciate the heads-up on this.  I'll definitely look into it.  I just bought four huge boxes of books at the library sale and have to add them to 8 already overflowing bookcases which haven't been catalogued.  Argh!!!! (in a good way)

   I use a Flic scanner, I don't know if it is still available.  Here is the link to the Collectorz book page

   It works great with my touch, you can manually add books, but that takes eons, so the scanner works the best.  In the i-Tunes store put clzbook and the app will come up along with reviews and info.  It has been a lifesaver for me, because like you I have bought duplicate books because I have so many.  This has saved me $ in the long run.  Daughter still has issues, but maintaining her weight with a smaller dose of the pill, hopefully the tremors won't return.  Thanks so much for asking.  Anyway - I am not sure about other scanners, the flic works great but may not be around anymore.

   Linda - I just want to make sure that I can do what I think I can.  With Collectorz I can divide books into subject like astronomy, ancient history, American history, etc.  They can also be sorted by author, etc.  And it will go to an iPod Touch, not just an iPhone.  Right?  Thanks much.  I hope your hand heals quickly.

   Hi Heather, yes I have the program on my regular computer and on my Touch.  I have the books under headings and though I have not tried author, I am sure that must work.  For the computer version they do have a trial download you can try.  If you got the trial you could manually load a few books and then check to make sure it does what you want it to.  If it does, then you can safely buy the iPod version because it is the same.  The makers of this are actually in Holland, but if you write them a question they are excellent at answering and are really helpful.  Thanks, I hope my hand heals fast as well; as I am right handed it is amazing to see all the things I have taken for granted that I now cannot do at all, or very well.  It is in such a awkward place and pulls very badly if I flex my thumb at all - thumbs are very important things I have discovered!  Anyway, I would download the computer trial from their website - give it a trial and then - if you like it take the plunge and buy the app.  Hope that helps.  Linda

   I have delicious library for mac and it can export to a regular iPod (I think), but only 1000 items that I know of. I like the "check-out" feature and using the scanner to import. 

   I'm wondering if anyone knows if either delicious or the collectorz can export to an ipod (not touch or iphone), but more than 1000 items. Otherwise, I might need a touch, but what is the monthly cost of that?

   Monthly cost for an iphone, quite high I think depending on what plan you have - the touch you just buy it and then no fees, except for the app downloads and music etc.

    The Touch is just an ipod, and no fee except for downloading music, apps and things from itunes.  When you are out and about you have to find a free wireless internet connection, or else you cannot get online.  I used it a lot when I was at the hospital with my daughter, as the hospital offered free wifi.  If you want access to the internet at all times, then you need to get an iPhone or something like that, and then there are monthly fees.    We looked at iPhones today, and my husband thinks it would cost at least $100 a month, so we are not bothering.  So remember if you want constant internet while you are out and about, the touch won't be good for you.  Hope that helps, Linda

    I am using the trial version of Collectorz right now and I am fairly sure you can do send more than 1000 entries to your iPod and download it as a list to your regular iPod or as a list/image library to your Touch.  Delicious (which I also have) can only do the text list of 1000 items to an iPod and nothing to the Touch (Amazon will not allow them to use the cover art so they Delicious can no longer sync).   As Linda stated, you can use the Touch with the internet if you have access to a WiFi.  In my house we have a wireless router so I can use the internet on my Touch in my home.  If I'm at the grocery store I can use it for notes, lists, music, etc., but not for internet.  Most hotels offer free WiFi as do many restaurants, bookstores, etc.  You could access it then.  I love my Touch for keeping kids busy at the store or doctor's appointments.  I'm hoping Collectorz allows me to 'take my library with me'.

    Heather - glad that the trial is going well with you - I have not used mine for a while (the app I mean) because I have been busy with health issues - but I love the premise of collectorz - it works well for me.  I am pretty certain Collectorz will let you take your library with you if you mean having all the info on the touch, I have mine on there.

    Christie, I know what you mean about entering books, I have a lot of old ones minus barcodes and that is very tedious.  I just did chunks at a time and put the most important ones in first - but it is time consuming. 

    It is wonderful to have a list to carry around though and make sure we don't buy duplicates, it becomes too easy to do when you have a lot of books.  I was glad to find the app for my computer, and then when they did the ipod version I was even happier.  Blessings, Linda

    Ha ha - ME TOO!!!!  There is a feature on Collectorz to import the info from Delicious.  I haven't figured out how to do that (the trial version may not even let you).  I entered about 50 books last night, about half without bar codes and it took about 30 seconds per book to enter it manually.  Thus far I'm really enjoying the ways I can sort/organize my books.  It's not as pretty as Delicious, but it seems more usable and portable.  I think you can even publish it to the web which I need to do so grandparents stop buying us the same books over and over (we got the same book two years in a row from the same grandparents!).

    Heather, you are quite right - it is not pretty, but it is practical, and I guess that is what counts.  It is so nice to see what you have in a hurry.  If you like it and you get a scanner, you can scan all your history books in one go and plug it into the computer and then it uploads all the information, as long as it can find the book - sometimes it does not find the book, but that is not too often.  So a scanner pays huge dividends once you are sure the program does what you want it to. Have fun entering, and no more dupe books.
