I'm curious about this book and how it's going for those using it. I'm considering it for my ds for a Christmas present.

We picked it up last year and intended to enjoy it with our Nature Study or as a lighter side of Science studies but the children (7,9 at that time) just didn't immediately like it. When that happens I tend to shelve the book for another try later or forget about it all together. I think if we'd stuck with it maybe they would have enjoyed it more. We stopped only a dozen or so pages into it. I loved the concept and really wanted them to dive in! Maybe later ...
I'd be curious to hear others comments since it seems like such a beloved book. Anyone else used it? Please share how you approached it ... maybe I just didn't get it right!

This is also on my wish list so I am eager to hear more, as well.

My girls ages 8, 6, and 4 loved it. I thought it was a little wordy in some chapters, but overall it does help you learn about insects in a fun story.

Hi all,
I was pondering buying this book as well. I was wondering if anyone could tell me if they think it would be suitable for people in another country or if the insects are all US insects? I think Charlotte Mason used the book herself, which makes me think it should be ok for us (we're in the UK), but I couldn't tell from the chapter headings in the contents and the sample chapter is a katydid. It does look like such a wonderful book.
Sorry to jump in on your question!

Jack's Insects covers insects from around the world. I recall insects from England, United States, South America, Africa, Australia, China, and Mexico. My 13yo (at the time) enjoyed it.

Thanks for that Sonya, we'll no doubt give it a try in the new year when the insects are back out in force!

Thanks for the replies! I will probably give this book a try sometime soon. My ds9 LOVES reading about animals and insects. We're doing a very small Christmas this year as far as presents go, and this may be the one for him.
