My children and I are in our first year of homeschooling and I’m doing my best to learn about and implement CM methods. We have been working on our first hymn (Be Thou My Vision) for 2 months. Here’s my question: do you normally memorize the entire hymn or just 1 or 2 verses. This particular hymn has 5 verses and while I think each one is very important and would love the kids to know the whole thing, we could probably spend at least another month or two to get to that point. My dd (the oldest) knows all 5 verses but the boys would definitely need more time.

I’d love to hear what other parents do in this area.

Well, I am no expert.  We just picked up hymn study in August with the Hymns for a Kids Heart book and cd.  We are on hymn no. 5 now.  We sing to one hymn per day.  We do a new hymn once per month after I read the intro. story about the hymn writer.  We sing that one all week.  The rest of the month, we sing the new one on MWF and review one of the others on Tues. and Thurs.  My children are age 7 and 5 and they don’t have any of them “memorized” but do enjoy it and are learning to appreciate the hymns and are familiar enough to sing along.

I generally go for a Children’s song, and a hymn each month.  I’m looking more for familiarity and enjoyment rather than memorization.

How old are your kids? We started doing hymns with ours when our oldest was almost 5. At that point, we just learned the first verse so that we could keep moving and have a variety. So we switched hymns every two weeks or so (but usually sang 1 or 2 of the previously learned ones in addition to the new one each day.) Now that we know quite a few tunes/first verses, we are going back through and starting to learn the second verses on them. They are familiar with many of them now and usually get excited if one of “their” songs is sung at church. And interestingly enough…my son was a toddler when we started and the first song he knew was “HOly, Holy, Holy”. Now are youngest is a toddler and when we say it is time for hymns, she always starts to try and sing “Holy, Holy, Holy”! It’s fun.

We read the short bio, find a several different versions of the hymn on the internet, then sing along.  We try to do that one hymn for one month, then move on.

Which reminds me, we need to do a hymn study today.  We just started back to school on Tues. and haven’t quite added in any “extras” except some poetry yesterday. *sigh*

Sorry, I forgot to post their ages. They are 9,10, and 12 ( we joke that they are in their gap because most of the year they are consecutive but during the winter there are a few months where they have gaps in their ages). Anyway, my daughter actually chose this hymn and they’ve all enjoyed it. For some reason I misunderstood all the times I read about hymn study and thought the purpose was memorization. I should have known that wasn’t the case but now we’ll be able to move on better. Thanks for all of your feedback. We did read the history behind the hymn and have listened to multiple versions but I was repeating it everyday because I was thinking memorization. Boy am I relieved! Smile

We are doing one hymn per week, with background.  I too am just going for familiarity.  One fun benefit I have noticed recently is that my shiest child is having the confidence to sing out loud at church and enjoy it.  =)

We learn one new hymn per 6 weeks, so 2 per term. We sing the first stanza (with chorus) every day for the first week, then add the second stanza  the second week, and so on until we have the whole hymn sung. When we have gone through entire hymn, then we sing through the entire hymn until week 6. If there are 5 or more stanzas, we may do 2 stanzas in one week, just depends on how difficult the hymn is.

This method really helps us to remember the words when we sing the hymns around the house or during our family worship time. Smile HTH!

Our church actually has a hymn of the month, so I just use that one. 🙂 I read a short bio when we start and then 3x/week, I play the song w/ lyrics on youtube and we sing along (the readers among us). We’ve usually learned it by the end of the month.
