I was looking into getting Truthquest guides as well but unless I find them used they’re not in my budget this year. Only because we’re looking to do high school world history so I’d have to get numerous guides, not one. ☹

I’ll have to see if I can swing it.

So for all of us in this boat of piecing together a one year high school history ala Charlotte Mason…it all feels great and inspiring in the planning process, but anyone else fear the lack of cohesiveness when you actually get into the school year (has happened to me when I try to piece together myself)?

    marmiemama,
I think that feeling of lack of cohesiveness is why I like to use a spine book. The spine book ties it all together. I’m still working on our course of study for next year. I love the Module 6 guide; it really gives a nice framework. But as I have been reading the spine and writing my guide for it, the spine book Module 6 uses plus the living books…well, I am afraid it will be way too much reading to try to cram into a year for my daughter. I’m actually considering switching the spine book and using something different. I’ve heard several recommend The Century for Young People by Peter Jennings for modern history. So I’m going to look into that. At a brief glance, it’s definitely not as many pages to read as the Bennett book. If the content is good, it looks like it could be a better fit page count wise for us to be able to also include the extra living books.

    Ahh…decisions, decisions….

I would think for doing a one year world history course, a spine would be helpful. That way, you get the cohesiveness of everything tying in together…yet you can also pick and choose several living books to add to it. Is spreading out the world history study over two years an option?

For my ds I needed to find something for the late 18th century-present day. That was hard for me until Mrs. K (I think) suggested Module 6 but adding in the last part of Story of the Nations volume 1. I hope to add in documentaries and other resources but I still need to work on that. I’m probably going to have his Literature readings be from the same time period and I have to work that out also. I am hopeful now that I have made some foundational decisions.

I thought about TQ also but I’d need two full guides, I think, and unless it was used they’re not in my budget either. I may use their Middle Ages one but not sure. Scm’s covers more but I’m just not sure yet. Can you tell that I’m not sure on that one? I found a used ancient’s guide last year for $2 so I’m kinda hoping to do the same thing this year

Regarding the volume 1 spine I had mentioned, I was actually referring to the first volume in America: The Last Best Hope series. The spine used for grades 10-12 in module 6 is volumes 2 and 3 of that series. Sorry to not explain that better in my previous comment. And I’ve not read this series myself, except for probably half of ch. 1 from volume 2. But I will tell you that volume 2 is a thick book.

I have considered Truthquest also; but decided not to go with that. There are so many books listed that I think I would get overwhelmed. 🙂

I actually have the BF US and World guide and most of the books that go with it. I ordered it before SCM’s module 6. Module 6 really helped me get a framework for using the BF US and World. I had opted to use the 10th-12th grade spine books from module 6 but as I already mentioned above, I think it’s going to just be too much reading. So I am looking at options right now for a spine…something that’s not really long and that can tie things together. And I have the BF guide to use with whichever books I choose for my daughter to read from the US and World program.

I’ve been reading through PNEU programmes for forms V and VI (these were the high school level forms) to get a better picture of what types of books Charlotte Mason used for history, how she scheduled them, and how many pages they were to read in a term. It has been very interesting. 🙂

No problem, Mrs. K, I’ll look into that, too.

    Thanks for the clarification:)

Claire, it looks like you were trying to paste from some other application rather than type into the forum directly. Microsoft Word brings lots of junk along with it when you paste, so maybe something like that was causing the problem.

Yes, I smiled when I deleted it because I knew you’d know what I’d attempted!   I’m so sorry.  Embarassed

Have you considered Master Books?  There are several high school subjects offered, this is just one of them.  Scroll down to see what is inside the book.  It is a bit schoolish…think of it as college prep!

I changed my history plans since my last post about Truthquest, etc. My highschooler decided to go to college, so she is going to use Notgrass. The rest of us will join her when appropriate and separate as needed.

I am curious why she couldn’t go to college having used TruthQuest?

She could, it is just that I feel that I am too easy on my high schoolers when it comes to writing assignments. I don’t feel that she would be well prepared for college with my low expectations for her assignments. I may not have a realistic view on this, but I feel like I haven’t pushed her enough because I don’t require long assignments with lots of structure, and I am afraid without a typical text that she won’t learn as much. Basically, I am using a curriculum out of fear. Also, her learning style is such that she likes more structure. Maybe she is afraid too? This is our second year with CM style. I welcome others thoughts and comments.

    I totally understand those concerns!

This site could prove useful to many – granted, it’s geared to literature instead of history, but I still like what I see.
