How to conceive???

Okay, I know this might be a strange question, but sometimes I wonder if we are missing something. My husband and I have a wonderful 8 yr old dd. We have not used anything to prevent having more dc and we have a wonderful relationship. Not having more at first was a blessing because our life was very busy for a time. For the last 3-3.5yrs we have been wanting to conceive again. 7months ago we actually made some major life changes, (I.e. moving from NJ to TX, buying a house in the country, learning to live on one income,etc.). Our life is so peaceful right now and we are definitely learning what it means to, “Be still, and Know”. Although we are happy with our dd, we often wish we could have more dc to raise for the Lord. My husband and I both wish that we could have been raised the way we are raising our dd.

So, my question is, do any of you know of any books about conception that would offer natural things that could possibly help? Or do you have any other advice? My husband and I have prayed about this and we know we don’t want to go through infertility treatments. We have been checked to make sure we are “normal” and everything checked out fine. I find it hard to talk to my doctor because she can’t figure out why I want things to be natural. I did take a pill for 3 months, but my husband and I began to feel it wasn’t right for us. I know for others it might be fine, but for some reason we couldn’t get peace about going that direction.

We were doing Bible time this morning and were reading a passage in Genesis with our dd. It was describing the fact that they knew the specific timing of when they could conceive. After that my dh and I were discussing timing. It seems that in today’s fast paced world we have lost the fine art of being in tune with our bodies.

Just as a disclaimer, I don’t spend 24/7 thinking and obsessing about being pregnant. However, after our conversation this a.m. I am finding it on my mind. I have found that a lot of people on this forum have “kindred spirits” and the thought crossed my mind that you all might know of some resources that we could consider. We would also appreciate your prayers in this matter. The thought of adoption has crossed my mind many times, and I am actually praying that if that is the direction we should go that He would burden my husbands heart for it. I know if God puts it on my dh heart I won’t ever have to question if he just went along with it to make me happy.

Ultimately, I just want to see God’s hand in this area of our life!!! Thank you for listening. Any thoughts or prayers would be appreciated.

I don’t know much about it – but I know there is a rythm method to determine dates…

The book Taking Charge of Your Fertility is a great place to start. Do the charting they explain because that is exactly the sort of information a fertility specialist would have you gather after a first appointment with them. (My sister had fertility issues so I know a bit about this.) The charting will give you an idea of several things, from when you’re going to ovulate (and can conceive) to IF you are even ovulating regularly, if your post-luteal phase is long enough for implantation (if the time between the egg releasing and your period beginning is long enough for a fertilized egg to travel from filopean tubes to uterus and implant, thus sending chemical messages to your body NOT to have a period), and more.

    🙂

Ultimately it is in God’s hands, but there is information out there to at least get an idea of what is going on in your body. As my sister said, she and her husband did all they could to learn about her body and her cycles and act on it, then trusted that God would do the rest – or that it wasn’t his plan for them to have more children.

Thanks Tristan! My husband and I came to a point back in October where we turned it completely over to The Lord. God had laid it on each of our hearts separately to be anointed. Not as a mystical way to conception, but as our putting it completely in his hands. We do however, want to make sure that we are taking care of ourselves and doing the things we can do.

Someone else recommended the same book. I will be looking that one up. Thanks again.

I also wanted to chime in and recommend Taking Charge of your Fertility – excellent book that I’m sure you’ll find very helpful. Yes, it is ultimately in God’s hands, but this will give you a little more information on how your body works.

With our first we tried for 9 months to concieve to no avail (I think all those years of birth control pills messed me up). Then we got this thing:

    http://www.fertile-focus.com/

Withing the first month of using we were pregnant. We also used when we wanted to concieve our second, again within the first month we conceived. It won’t boost your fertility, but it will help you get a handle on when your body does everything. Come to find out my cycle was TOTALLY wierd (31 days cycle, ovulating 4 days before period).

Look into Natural Family Planning. The book Tristan mentioned is possibly the same.

I just started taking Peruvian Naturals Maca which is a root used to boost fertility in males and females as well as helping balance hormones and increase energy. My step-mother extols its balancing properties, so I’m hopeful. It’s really very reasonably priced as well.  Sending a prayer your way!

I agree about Taking Charge of Your Fertility.  I charted for a year and it was really eye opening.  After reading it I felt like I understood my body better than I ever had.

    Praying for you!

There is a wonderful organization called “The Couple to Couple League” where you and your husband can take a class learning how to ready your body’s signs of fertility. My husband and I took the course before we became pregnant with our first child. We learned so much and the teachers were fantastic in helping us as we charted. I believe it is a Catholic organization, but you do not have to be Catholic to attend the group, it is open to anyone. You can find a group near you from this website: http://www.ccli.org/

I’m a childbirth educator and doula so this topic is close to my heart! 🙂

A big ‘yes!’ to all of the above recommendations! We are Catholic and received training in Natural Family Planning (NFP) through our church. It is a wonderful program and has helped us to achieve and avoid pregnancy, but even better it helped me learn more about the signs my body is giving off. Now I am like the Biblical women you mentioned who ‘know’ when they are fertile. (There are physical signs, not just a ‘feeling.)

The Couple to Couple League that was mentioned is part of NFP. Also, as mentioned, you do not have the be Catholic at attend or benefit from NFP. There is a bit of a theological component but I don’t think it would be offensive to other Christians. The practical aspects of NFP are right up your alley of allowing God’s will to be done as He sees fit. It is just an undeerstanding of your body, not a ploy to work around God’s intentions.

Taking Charge of Your Fertility (TCOYF) is excellent is is the same info as NFP but without the theology. There are also helpful discussion forums online. NFP and TCOYF were essential when were were having difficulty conceiving our second child. I saw an OB and she was very ill-informed on fertility/conception. By charting and calling an NFP teacher, I learned that my luteul phase was too short to sustain a pregnancy, I followed tips top change it, and then conceived.

Another program similar to NFP is The Creighton Method, which is more focused on cervical mucous patterns. A close friend was having difficulty conceiving and, lo and behold, her Creighton instructor was able to identify an infection (purely by reading the charts – no exam!). They cleared up the infection and conceived!

The rhythm method works only if your cycle is 28 days and you ovulate on the 14th day, etc. If this doesn’t apply or you aren’t sure then you may spend a lot of time ‘trying’ on the wrong days. (This has happened to my clients before!)

I also have a good number of clients who utilize ovulation predictor kits (found at drugstores). When you have a guesss as to when you might ovulate, you pee on a stick and it tells you whether you are fertile or not.

Lastly, I would encourage you to start eating a pregnancy diet and take prenatal vitamins to build up a nutritious body from which to grow your baby. Blessings on your family as you try for another little one! Please feel free to PM me if there is anything else I can do by way of recommendations. 🙂

The site fertilityfriend.com is based on the book Taking Charge of Your Fertility. (I think!)  There are several articles on there that explain things well. I have never read the book but gleaned a lot from the site. It’s also got a free online chart you can use to try to be more aware of how your body is working.  They also have a vip membership you can pay for and get more bells and whistles but I have never paid. I just like to keep track of my cycles as they are getting longer and longer and harder to know when things are going on. LOL
