For our summer term, we are going to raise tadpoles and study frogs. What books and/or resources would you consider vital for this? My boys will are 6 and nearly 8.
pianogirl363ParticipantHi Katrina,
I wrote a blog post about our amphibian nature study that contains our favorite books on frogs:

Hope this helps! 🙂

rejoicevermore13Participantwe are reading thornton burgess Adventures of Grandfather Frog right now with my 4&5 yo and they are loving it! short chapters but very amusing and you really do learn so much from burgess’ books!
RobinPParticipantGreat list, Anna! I found a couple I will be adding to my library.
Just a hilarious “warning” which I’ve posted before. The spring of my oldest’s kindergarten year a lady who knew we were homeschooling brought us two tadpoles. We enjoyed the whole process of watching their transformation. Well that son is now 23 years old AND WE STILL HAVE THOSE FROGS!!!!! I kid you not. My 10yo just finished feeding them, I told my oldest he would be the first ever to take his kindergarten project to college with him. He decided to leave them here. At their age, he was afraid it would traumatized them. 😀 Anyway…just a heads-up that it may be a long-term commitment. 🙂
Katrina in AKParticipantAnna, thanks for the lovely book list! I will be seeing what our library has. I have a few generic frog life cycle books, but am always looking for more.
rejoiceevermore13, we have read The Adventures of Grandfather Frog and thoroughly enjoyed it. I think I have Old Mr. Toad on the shelf.
Robin, that IS a hilarious warning. Yes, we will see what happens to our leopard frogs when they come. Up here in AK, we only have wood frogs where we live, which are pretty remarkable creatures, too. They freeze SOLID in the winter, and reanimate in the spring. God’s creatures are so cool! 🙂
We are going to do a Citizen Science project for the wood frogs at our local lake (counting peeps for 3 minutes, daily, for a couple of weeks), and I found a model frog to dissect. And, my beginner reader may enjoy reading Frog and Toad, as well.
Thank you all!
andreamParticipantAnna, just wanted to say I love your blog posts! I have used them in the past and find what you post so helpful. Thank you for sharing!
HSMAMAParticipantLove the blog post, Anna! Could I pester you to ask how/where to find info on the care and keeping of the frogs at each stage? I’d love to try this with the kids!
