So after almost three years of CM educating I am finally going to read the REAL BOOKS myself over the summer. I have kids all over the board in terms of age and ability. I have watched all the dvd seminars from this site, read Levison's books, the Andreola book, read For the Children's Sake several times, and spent hours pouring over this and other CM sites. Knowing that is my background with CM, would you all recommend that I just start with the first book in her series? Is there a particular order that would be best?
CM's own words...finally!

I started with Volume 1, which is a great introduction and gives lots of guidance for working with young children, up to about age 9, including the basics of habit training. Then I read Volume 3, which is focused more on school aged children, and talks more about curriculum. My kids are young, but this one helped me to see the long term plan, so I know where we are going.
However, my favourite so far has been Volume 6. It gave me a good understanding of the 'why' of many things CM did. She goes through her 20 principles. It was written near the end of her career, so it is based on many years of observation, learning, and refining of her philosophy. If you are not looking for anything specific, that's where I would start.
Of course, I haven't read 2, 4, and 5 yet, so maybe they are even better.
One option would be to go through the summaries (found on the AO website) and get a sense of what's in each volume, and then decide which ones you want to read in more detail.
Enjoy. Get your notetaking pencil ready!

Like you, I had read just about all the other books about CM before I acutally starting reading CM herself, so I had quite a bit of background. I started with Vol. 1 and there was still so much rich and wonderful stuff in there even though I was pretty familiar with the CM method before I started. I am reading Vol. 6 now, which will be my second - for similar to reasons to what Joanne mentioned - I thought it might be a good overall summary of her philosophy. Will probably read 3 after that, but we'll see. It's kind of slow going for me as I have time, but worth the effort! And definetely keep a notebook handy - there have been so many nuggets I've wanted to take note of as I've read. =)
Happy reading!

Ok... volume 1 or volume 6... hmm. They both sound perfect. I'll see which I can get a better price on. :) Thanks very much!

Like you I read a number of other books first before CM's original works. I am working through her series now. I am going through them in order though the ones I have heard recommended to start with are 1 and 6. So far I am in book 4. Even if you do 1 and 6 first, I would say try to get around to the others eventually too. I am learning a lot from them. Vol. 4 is amazing. It is like an owner's manual for your mind. I do blog posts on what I have been struck by in her books periodically though in those I am only up to vol. 2.The website is here: http://www.lettersfromnebby.wordpress.com

If you're looking to buy her books, check out whole sets on ebay. I haven't looked lately, but last summer I found mine for less than $15 including shipping.

I'll keep watching ebay... right now the prices are high. The best price I can find at the moment is Amazon. Still searching though. :)

Erin I would love to do a reading group! I don't feel qualified to lead it but if someone else does I think that would be wonderful! :)

Hey, I am starting one where I am. We only have 4 ladies, but at least we will finally have someone to TALK about it with, even if only once a month. ;)

Oooh, we have to figures something out. Wouldn't that just make Charlotte's words come alive and perhaps even more accessible? Wheels are turning!
