My DS was over last night and we were discussing “My Side of the Mountain” which I’m reading with my DD’s right now. It brought to mind a story he read when he was much younger that was similar. Does this sound familiar to anyone?

It’s about a boy (or man) whose airplane crashes in the wilderness. He also survives by his wits. He either lives in the plane, or uses plane parts to build a shelter. He wouldn’t go far from the plane in case someone was looking for him. At the end of the book, he discovers he was very close to a city all along, but once he returns to the city, he decides the wilderness life was better and returns to live out his days in the wilderness.

Does anyone recognize that? We’d sure like to know the title if anyone does.

Could it be “Hatchet” by Gary Paulson?

I read the description on Amazon…I bet it is. I’ve left him a message to let me know if that’s the one.

Thanks a bunch. It was really driving us crazy last night. He had the 2 stories confused in his mind, then began to wonder if the second even existed. Apparently it did!
