I’m trying to find a NT Commentary for children. I’m looking for something similar to Nancy E. Ganz’s commentaries which are recommended in Module 1. My DS(9) is struggling to comprehend the verses that we read each day. Right now I give a short summary of what I’m about to read, read 6 verses, then ask him to narrate or discuss them with me. He can’t seem to do it, instead he will often make things up just to tell me something. This is the only subject he is struggling with. Besides getting a commentary, my only other thought is to go verse by verse and have him narrate after each. The only reason I haven’t tried this is because I think it’s a comprehension problem, he hears the words but doesn’t understand the meanings so he applies whatever he thinks it means and that’s what he narrates back. That’s why I thought a commentary might be what he needs, by supplying words he can understand. (I’ve tried using the KJ and NKJ with abt the same result for each)

    Thanks any suggestions are appreciated.

Charlene, which portions of the NT are you reading to him? It seems like the Gospels or Acts might be easier to narrate for a 9-year-old than, say, one of the epistles.

We are following Module 5 so we were just doing the ones listed there; starting with Ephesians, which we are almost done with. We have only been in school for 3 wks, so I don’t mind making a shift and going through the Gospels instead but was concerned he would have the same problem. I would really like him to hear me read the scriptures but would like to correlate with a narrative story like book for him to narrate from. I know there are a good many for OT but haven’t searched far enough yet to find a good NT one. I think I will follow your advice, Sonya, and begin with the Gospels.

The Book of Mark will probably be easiest for starters.

If you ever do find a good children’s commentary on the NT, let me know, please! Smile
