I don't think I could do school on Saturdays just to have something for the chlldren to do. Mine are 7 and 8, and they play really well together. They LOVE Saturdays! Saturdays are also the day that dh and I sleep in. The kids make their own breakfast and play and do a great job of leaving us alone. Often, we stay in bed until 9:30 or later. It's awesome! I know some couples aren't like that, but dh and I do LOVE having one day a week to stay up late the night before and not suffer the consequences the next day because we got to sleep late. He is the worship pastor at our church, so Sundays aren't generally restful until around 1:00 in the afternoon. He and the kids will pile up in the bed and turn on a movie while I grocery shop. I consider that a Win-Win for all of us. Just my thoughts...

I grocery shop on Thurs morning (Shop N Save has $10 off coupon day on Thursdays) and it happens to be our LIGHT school day as well as Fridays since we have co ops all day. Mon-Wed no errands if possible. We either school some before and after grocery errand or go first thing and school when we return. We also have piano on Thursday afternoons so it works out for us.

I don't do grocery when hubby is off on Sat/Sunday because Saturday is our day of rest (Sabbath) and Sunday is the first day of the week to which I get a majority of my cleaning and baking done.

So I suggest pick a day you can do light school work and shop that day so it's less hectic. HTH!

I go grocery shopping in the evening, either right after dinner or after the kids are being put to bed by dad. The stores are pretty empty then. Sometimes I'll do a BIG shop on a Saturday and hit 2 or 3 stores (each has different staples we need) while the kids are doing a "project" or something fun with dad and I'll buy enough for the month. My husband will make produce runs on his way home from work as needed for the rest of the month. Or I'll do a later night run again. It's my peaceful quiet time after a long day!

Thank you everyone. Knowing what you all do really helps. I kind of like the idea of doing some school on Saturdays. Wouldn't that give the children something to do? But it seems a little strange too--a little wrong since traditional schools don't work on that day. I am thinking that it might be better for me to pick a different day to shop even and miss out on doubling coupons. We went to the store today, and I'm tired thinking about going to church tonight. I think shopping with 3 children wears me out. I will be praying and talking with my dear husband.

I may seem like the odd one here, but I like to go on Saturday or Sunday afternoons when dh can stay at home with the children or take them somewhere fun. My children are well behaved at the store because I have trained them to be, but that doesn't discount the fact that momma needs time to herself every once in a while, and this is a perfect opportunity. I meal plan on Friday or Saturday, then shop on Saturday or Sunday afternoon. I also buy some items in bulk from Azure Standard once a month. We buy meat in bulk from a local rancher. So really, my trips are pretty quick since I only get produce and extra items like raisins or coconut milk or whatever. I actually like grocery shopping and don't consider it a chore. Plus, while I'm out I usually stop at Starbucks for a yummy treat that I don't have to share with anyone else.

We often run errands on Fridays - my dh works nights, and he will often stay up a few hours on Fridays to get a few things done. Friday is payday, as well as either the last day at some stores for the flyer prices - or the first day at other stores for the new flyers....

Honestly, If you want to do Wednesday - do it, but remove almost all school from the schedule. Either plan for a 4 day school week, or plan for some school on Saturday. (If the kids don't like that idea - point out to them that many PS kids have to run around with their parents running errands on Saturday. That is what my grandson does on Saturday - go grocery shopping with his mom, clean the house, etc.) - So you guys do that stuff on Wednesday, when the prices are better and the crowds much smaller (so it takes less time)

I run errands as they come up when I'm taking my dc to a weekly class (3-4 days a week) and do grocery shopping/Walmart some time on Saturdays. I don't like to take my dc with me as I get distracted by their questions and such so they stay home with dad. I do pick up perishables/milk/bread if necessary on the way to/from the class my dc take at one of the stores that is on the way. I don't do the bank/post office much (only if I have to buy stamps in bulk/pbs, and we have direct deposit), so that's not a big errand for me.

Because we live a bit "out of town," my DH does all the shopping on Fridays on his way home from work (shorter work days on Fridays). What a time saver that is for me. He is an expert shopper...I get lost in stores. He even goes by the library and picks up our weekly stack of books. And I am so blessed that he picks up our monthly bulk food order as well. I "try" (there is no try) to have a clean house on Fridays before DH gets home with the goods. So, I am spoiled because I would rather be mopping than shopping. I know that doesn't help with your question...just an opportunity for me to verbally realize I ought not to take my DH for granted. :-)

I shop Friday when we get the paycheck. I do light school days in the afternoon - this is usually another Nature Walk and things like Shakepeare or some hands on activity that I wanted to do. I hate the crowds on Saturday. =)

I, like Misty, school 4 days a week which leaves Friday for errands. We are gone all morning and are home by noon. My husband works nights so he sleeps until 1 in the afternoon. On Fridays when he gets up, I try to have all the errands done so we can hang out with him.

I usually go immediately after lunch ever Wednesday. We do all of our errands that day. Today I have the shopping, the bank, post office, and dropping something off. My children are 4, 6, and almost 8. We have nothing on Wed night so I usually let my youngest skip her nap and go to bed early.
When I had a younger child who needed to nap and couldn't skip I either went in the morning before nap and did school in the afternoon or went in the evening after dinner. I usually take my children with me but sometimes my husband keeps them in the evening while I go.
When we only had one car I would sometimes wake up early and go before the kids got up and my husband was home. It was nice because I could shop quickly and the shelves were well stocked! I have also gone after the kids go to bed when I was nursing. I'm a night person so this worked better than getting up early. I just shopped at Walmart.

I usually try to plan a light day Fridays and go in the afternoon. This year my boys will both be going to Lego at the Library for 1.5 hours on the third Friday of the month, so I will be dropping them off before heading to the grocery store around the corner for my major spree of the month. I'll pick up parishables at the local market as needed through out the week. We will usually go into town once a week for family swim on Sunday evenings, so I have been getting my groceries after that to save a seperate trip to town. Gas prices are rediculous.

Tristan - I love your idea, something to really think about for Saturdays. Yes, that sleep thing is a problem, not that I don't wake daily at 530, but I'm doing devotions, working out and taking my time on the computer before the heads are all up. But I will pray about it. As it seems like a way to carve out 2 hrs of my time. I'd still be home by 7.

For us we school 4 days a week and Fridays are off. So we grocery shop and run around all morning. We are done and home by noon. It's a long morning but it's the only way for us. And yes I take all 7 with me. We have tried to leave the 3 older ones home, just this past school year, but I ended up coming home once to a son in tears and fearful, once to total ruckus, and once to just he did that he did this. So they all go.
