jmac17 on "Using Rosetta Stone"

I don't use the organizer, but I can tell you the breakdown of Rosetta Stone. Level 1 has 4 Units (I haven't checked, but my guess is that the other levels will be similar). Each Unit has 4 Lessons. So that would give the 16 lessons you mentioned.

Each Lesson has a Core exercise that takes 20-30 minutes and then several smaller exercises (vocab, writing, reading, speaking, listening, etc.) that take 5 - 15 minutes and just reinforce the Core. Each lesson also does some review from previous lessons. You can set up different programs, depending on the student. The programs will have more or less reviews, depending on their purposes. So that would explain how someone has over 100 lessons listed.

What we do is that I just plan Rosetta Stone 3 times a week. My children spend about 15 minutes each time. So they complete either 1/2 of the core lesson, or one or two smaller exercises/reviews. We haven't been super consistent (Spanish is something that gets dropped if we get busy), so DD7 is in the middle of Unit 3, after one year. I've been working through it as well and I'm almost done Level 1. I think if we did it consistently 3 times a week, we would have finished the level in a year. We'll keep working over the summer and hopefully be ready to start level 2 in the fall.

If you buy the homeschool version, there are also review worksheets and activities that you can print out. We haven't used those yet, although I plan to look over them this summer to decide if we want to implement them next year. At first glance, they look like they might be more appropriate for an older student, but I'm not sure about that yet. There is also an audio review that you can use, but so far I haven't implemented that either.

Using the organizer, it might work to just plan 3 sessions per week, so you would get 108 lessons in a 36 week year (or more if you want to do it 4 or 5 days per week). Then just mark that sessions as done once 15 minutes has been completed, regardless of which actual exercises were done. Mind you, it's been a couple of years since I did my trial of the organizer, so I'm no expert!

Hope that helps. Let me know if you need any more specifics that I could look up for you.

For those that use Rosetta Stone, exactly HOW do you use it? Is it broken down into lessons? Can it be easily put into the CM Organizer?

Any tips would be greatly appreciated. I will be using it with my ds9 this year and want to get a jump start on it :)

Thanks,

Free videos that we used for Spanish are called "Salsa!" I've also bought and listened to a great music CD called "En Mi Casa" that I bought through Amazon. We are moving to Little Pim for my youngest and The Learnables for my oldest this year. Hubby and I are starting Pimsleur Ultimate Level 1 as well. We both studied spanish in college and hope to get conversational at home as a family.

I'm also looking into Latin options. There are so many to choose from!

We have been doing La Clase Divertida and really enjoying it. We do not do the book work, but watching the videos we are learning. My oldest is 7. It is not fancy or flashy, but we really do enjoy it. I am learning Spanish rught along with them, which is fun.

Thanks for the recommendations for Latin. I was leaning toward Getting Started with Latin, but hubby came home and said she needs to learn a living language. So she picked Swedish. She can't be simple, can she? She'd better settle on something quick here. I'm trying to plan!!! LOL

Alright, so does anyone have recommendations for Spanish then? That I know for sure we are doing with at least the younger 3.

We are planning to begin Visual Latin, available online, this fall. There are two free lessons to try out. I think the cost is very reasonable as well.

In a couple of weeks, before we start that, we will begin going through Getting Started with Latin by Linney.

Both of these resources look wonderful.

OK, so my dd10 wants to learn Latin next year (Year 5). No clue where to start with that one... I know no Latin whatsoever, and I have no clue how to go about finding a suitable curriculum for her! I do know that I need her to be self-taught, I prefer a Christian program, and I would like it to adhere to CM's foreign language recommendations as much as possible (of course).

Then there are the other 3 kids: dd9 (Year 4), dd7 (Year 2), and ds4. I'd like them to do Spanish - something easy, both for me and for them. My dh is fluent in Spanish but with no real time to think about teaching it himself. Doesn't have to be self-taught - I can do it with them. Otherwise same as above.

Any thoughts on either language? TIA!

We are also starting up with Spanish in 2nd grade at our house. We are trying Song School Spanish, by Classical Academic Press. There's a cd with fun songs that we listen to a couple of times per chapter. Their workbook shows them the words to the song and has several activities to reinforce the new words: writing, drawing, games, puppets, etc. We are all really excited about starting it soon.

Speekee is an immersion approach on dvd, fun! It's also available online. If you buy the dvds you'll need a "region free dvd player" unless you already live in Europe to read their dvd format. We got ours on Amazon, easy to find.

We are using La Clase Divertida and the kids really like it, and I am learning too. You dont have to do the workbook, just watch the videos if you want to. He is big on family participation, which I like. It was filmed a while ago, and nothing flashy but we are learning and the kids ask to watch it daily.

We have Roseta Stone, but I won't start that until 3rd or 4th grade.
