Good news and bad news....

First the bad news: No, I didn't find an Oxford First Ancient History at an awesome price....(awwww!)

Now, the good news: I scored some wonderful items at great prices! I even got an unused ant farm with all of the supplies for only $5. (My youngest has been asking for one.)

I picked up Truthquest History (Ancient Rome), Natural Speller (which I've wanted to take a look at....if I don't use it, oh well, it was only $1), the Managers of Their Chores book, Madame How and Lady Why, a Contenders of the Faith handbook, a couple of learning tools for multiplication and division, an abacus (the exact one they use for Right Start), and a microscope set that will be just fine for my upper elementary kids....and a few more things like a Secret Keeper devotional book for my young teen daughter, some maze books and magic trick games my son found, some free reading books....and I only spent $50.75 for everything I bought!!!

My head is swirling with books, books, and more books! I can see where books and reading could become an addiction....

Thank you all for your book list links. These are awesome resources! I've seen book titles today that I haven't thought about for quite some time, along with new titles to explore.

Special thanks to Christie for all that time and effort you put into your list....it's amazing and so, so helpful!

I think I have a lot on my list for history (mod. 1, after we finish the last bit of mod. 6), I'm pretty well set with Math U See for the girls and Math Mammoth for my special needs son, and I'm not too concerned about music/art/poetry right now. (Those last 3 are easy to get what I need from the library and other sources.)

I do need to look for some literature books, especially for 14yo dd. She was not a fan of Anne of Green Gables (gasp!) and only made it through a few chapters of Journey to the Centre of the Earth....*Sigh.*

I'm also doing living books for science with my two youngest next year (6th grade & 7th grade/special needs), and I am using chapters from Considering God's Creation on weather, rocks, insects, and plants. So, I'm trying to find good living books on those topics. I'm looking at the SCM suggestions (when I get them from the library or at a book sale), but I'm having a hard time locating all of those topics.

I'm looking forward to being overwhelmed at this sale....it's a lot of books in a college gymnasium, so it's like being a kid in a candy shop!

Sue,
You've probably seen these posts before but, did you look at any of Christie's booklists? Here's the link to her orginal post on them. You could try the Master Booklist, it's a combination of Ambelside/Higher Up & Further In/Honey for a Child's Heart. In list form. I use the SCM lists first too, but have found some great books from Christie's lists, that's where I first "met" Jim Arnoksy. Christie also posted an article from Valerie's Living Books about booklists themselves. Which I've found is nice to re-read as I LOVE book shopping. Good thing I have limited budget right now!

I ditto Tristan. Bring those lists for reference as you shop. It can help narrow down the tough choices. Also, maybe decide how many books you plan to buy for each child. Having this set number will help you have a condensing mindset. :)

Sue, what module will you be doing? Go to SCM's bookstore and download the sample for that Module's handbook. It will have a booklist in it divided into grade ranges if I remember right - that is where I would start. Love the SCM books!

The biggest used book/curriculum fair has come upon me like a flood....it's tomorrow! And this year, I actually have a little money to spend there.

What I usually do is to go through the SCM curriculum guide (our primary guide for setting up the year's essentials for study) and see what is readily available through our local library systems. Then I look for additional material (or substitutions) on other book lists. Once I've settled on a master list of books/materials, I take that with me to the book fair where I can hopefully find anything that is not library-available or is only available through interlibrary loan. I also sometimes buy things that are fantastic finds at a really low price.

This year, however, I am getting a really late start on my list. We just had too many other things to focus on in the past couple of weeks. So, I'm not sure how much of a list I'll come up with, and I hate to go shopping unprepared. I'm wondering what book lists any of you would recommend (especially for history, science, and literature) that would be the quickest and easiest to review and make decisions on what I might add to the SCM lists. My kids are needing grade levels 4-9.

Thanks,

Sue
